Post Light Aircraft in Beds

From BBC East Teletext: AIRCRAFT CRASHES DURING FLIGHT TAKE OF
Reports that a light aircraft has
crashed in the region are coming in.

Details are sketchy at this stage but
it is thought the plane crashed in
Bedfordshire during take-off.

Early reports declared the plane had
exploded into a ball of flames as it
first climbed into the air around 6pm
this evening.

According to those reports, the pilot
of the plane amazingly managed to
escape serious injury and emerged
safely from the wreckage.

This was a Cherokee 6 (G-BADO) which was departing a 600m unlit grass strip (Mepershall) just west of Henlow in the dark. Fortunately the pilot escaped without significant injury.

Question

What's the story then?
Sounds like a very lucky pilot from what I've heard.
