Medical Confusion
Just a warning...
I had my last medical 6 months ago, Class 1.
Don't currently need a Class 1, so being 44 yrs young I contacted the CAA Medical Dept. and explained my situation.
At first the lady told me I would have to have a fresh medical, class 2.
I queried this and aftertaking advice she told me I was okay exercising class 2 rights with my current certificate until next April.
Having sensed the uncertainty I dropped them a line confirming this advice.
My wife took an urgent phone call today (1st November) telling her that I must not fly as I did not have a current medical.
She again described my situation and after consultation the CAA phoned back to tell her that I was legal until April after all, quoting the latest JAR etc.
Moral is that with all the current uncertainty write to them to confirm any telephone conversations.
I have now recorded the advice in the public domain by means of this posting.
I originally imagined that the CAA would have issued me with a Class 2 back dated to replace the Class 1.
As a last comment I must say that the medical people have always been friendly and helpful but seem to be getting bogged down with all this JAR nonsense.

It's nice to see that the situation is as clear as mud! It really is reassuring to see the powers that be who hold our ability to have fun flying in their hands "temporarily uncertain of their position". Glad they gave you the OK in the end. Where were you when your wife took the call? I hope you were flying!

Beagler,
Why am I not surprised? I had a similar experience. I went to Gatwick to get an initial Class 1, just to make sure I could. I won't actually need it until (if) I pass all the CPL exams etc etc etc. While I was there, having been told unofficially that I'd got my class 1, I asked if I needed to renew it every six months, or if I could fly on a Class 2 until I actually needed the Class 1, without having to go to Gatwick again. I got three different answers! Nobody was sure! Result - I think I'm going to have to spend lots of dosh to keep my Class 1 up to date, at least until the day that someone understands JAR.

To fly is human, to hover, divine.

Unfortunately I wasn't airborne.
Wouldn't it have been fitting if I had returned the call from my mobile whilst overhead the Belgrano
My situation is the same as Whirly's, wanted to make sure I could still make the grade but in the current climate the tyros can wait.

Recently, I received a registered letter from FCL telling me my licence now has the following restriction - "not to exercise public transport priveledges".
I nearly fell of me seat.
This was meant to be a "prior notice" but included my new licence page. They also gave me 14days to appeal!
After two days of frantic ringing to that answer machine, they eventually rang me back to say there had been a mistake. A letter was promised to this effect but so far nothing received and not even an apology.
