Question Clubs in Cambridge

Just moved up to Cambridge and looking for somewhere good to fly, can anyone recomend anywhere, (preferably @ Cambridge airfield as I only have a bike at the moment!)

And also, does BA have a facility at Cambridge? And if not why was a BA 747 climbing out of there today (16/10)??????

Try Flying Club Conington at Peterborough Conington. Telephone 01487 834161, or have a look at their website www.flying-club-conington.co.uk

Unhappy

Cambridge Aero Club (01223 373214) has some pros and cons. It's based at Cambridge airport and run by Marshalls which owns the airport.

The pros: some of their instructors are very experienced Marshalls test pilots. Their aircraft are generally very well maintained.

The cons: Only 152s I'm afraid (though there's a private 182 or PPL hire).

Overall, a good place to learn, not quite so good after you've got your PPL.

Also at Cambridge: Tiger Moths! You can still do the PPL on a Tiger, and arriving for your lessons by bike will add a suitable period flavour. Great fun to see the Tigers working a smaller version of the Marshalls circuit (which can have some pretty fast and heavy metal in it. They even do their PFLs on the field.
It costs more per hour than the average, but will probably make you a pretty darn sharp pilot. I learned on a trike and have been struggling to get to grips with a Tiger (not one of the Cambridge ones) in the last few weeks. Blooming hard work, but great fun.

Otherwise, I hear good things about Bourn and found it very pleasant when I used to drop in as a visitor for circuits there late in my PPL course. All I know about Fowlmere is that everything seems splendidly looked after. Very good grass runway. Believe they train on Traumahawks, about which views in the GA world seem to be divided (never been in one myself but one of my instructors had learned on one and spoke of it in, er, colourful terms). Have fun.

Thumbs up

I learnt at Fowlmere a couple of years ago, and still fly their fleet of PA28's.

Pro's - The won best kept fleet of the year this year. Arguably the best grass runway you'll find anywhere. Excellent instructors

Con's - Slightly higher price than some places, only 1 training aircraft ( Yes it's a Tomahawk G-BNPL )

Don't be scarred off by stories of the Tomahawk. I enjoyed flying it, and the wing is in the right place atleast ;-)

Go over and take a look, you are sure to get
a friendly welcome.

Pete

Have you considered the Mid Anglia School of Flying, which is an outfit which arose from the ashes of the Ipswich School of Flying which cloed down when the Labour Council closed Ipswich Airport and now flies from Marshalls Airport in Cambridge which will be closer for your bike than Bourn.

Although I haven't had a great deal of contact with them since I bought into a group outside Cambridge I understand they're going strong.

They have a Warrior, C152, PA38, Seneca andprobably much more. Doug Moonie is CFI try him on 01223 294466

Good Luck

I fly regularly with Mid-Anglia (learned with them while at Ipswich) now at Cambridge; they have two Warriors, an Archer, which is beautiful to fly, a twin and a 182. Good fun and friendly place to fly, and reasonable rates. also do a lot of trips to France, etc, time sharing with students and those doing IMC ratings, etc. Great way to build hours and have fun at the same time.

Talking

If you want to fly aircraft that are well maintained, fly with professional flying instructors (who also do some test flying), you MUST go to Cambridge Aero Club.

They do a deal where if you fly 3 hours in a month, the rest of that months flying is at half price, that is under £50 per hour!!!

Great place and great instructors!
