Troyes Barberey Airport
I am hoping to clear customs at Troyes on the way from Biggin to Annecy.
The SIA website says 1hr prior notice, but my girlfriend who is fluent in french just phoned the customs at the airport and was told you need 24 hours notice by fax and if you do not arrive on schedule, you may be fined. Has anyone any recent experience of problems at this airport ?
So now thinking about alternatives - Reims or Dijon - any experiences ?

I've flown to Troyes twice directly from another London GA airfield and have not given them any prior notification of my arrival (other than filing/activating the usual flight plan and calling Troyes tower about 15 miles out).
I remember Le Touquet used to ask for prior notification for inbound international flights but the notam requesting this has now disappeared and I don't bother with any notification there anymore (again, other than the usual flight plan and tower call).
Never been to Reims but Dijon is a friendly place (although pretty close to Annecy). The nice thing about Troyes is that the fuel pumps are right off the runway whereas there is a long taxi at Dijon. A slight problem with Troyes though is that unless you have a French Carte Bleu (which most non-French don't and can't get), you'll have to deal with the terminal folks for fuel and they have never struck me as the most friendly bunch (very militant about their breaks and very happy to make you wait 2 hours).

I've been there a few times (not recently) but there had been occasions that the field was closed because ATC had gone to lunch. At such times only aircraft with French R/T communications were allowed to land.
Was at Troyes recently. No problem with phoning for customs as I left my previous point. They were no prob for fuel, they just turned the pumps on by remote then I paid by credit card.

Was at Troyes last month. I have nothing but praise for the place. Although I cleared customs at LTQ so cant comment on your original question.
Self Service fuel which was cheap and no problems with paying. I even got a lift from one of the terminal staff to a hotel for free!
Well worth a visit

I stopped there about a year ago direct from the UK. I just sent a fax to the douane number well in advance, and had no difficulties. There is a customs office within 100 m of the airport, so it may be that they are particularly keen on customs procedures.

Troyes is the most friendly and efficient airport ever. Just file flight plan and go. On landing taxi to fuel pump and wave to office and they switch on pump for self service. Walk 100m and pay in office with any credit card. If no reply from twr just land anyway. If nobody in office at lunchtime there is good little restaurant in the airport building. Ask nicely and the nice man behing the counter will sell you some locally produced champagne at very good prices.
Worth a detour

I always use Troyes if I am flying over that part of Europe, the whole deal is the best that I have encountered in France for a quick customs clearance and refuel.
I can't think of any other French airfield that I would rather use for a "tech stop". I did night stop once, the centre of town has a very old (but small) historic area but only big enough for an evening of the tourist thing. As you might expect the eating was first class and at a very reasonable price.

I too have had only positive experiences at Troyes, including them fixing my failed magneto.
Customs is dealt with by fax inbound and outbound by the nice chap who manages the field phoning them to see if they are interested in your departure, they aren't of course.

I also have had good experiences at Troyes, I found them very helpful - nice place N/S runway pointing down the Rhone Valley. I got no answer on the radio the first time I went there (lunchtime between 1pm & 2pm). The town is well worth a visit.

Troyes And Annecy And Autun
Thanks to everyone who answered my last post about Troyes.
I can now report back that it was as predicted - no bother about customs either in or out. The landing fee for an RV6 was 8 euro's
and self refueling 1.79 euro's per litre ( cheaper than Biggin).
We flew on to the beautiful town of Annecy and stayed 4 nights, only a landing fee of 12 euro's and free parking on the grass. Came back via St Yan then 2 nights at old town of Autun - no landing fee but fuel 2 euro's per litre. Only slightly dissapointing part of trip was the restaurant at Troyes was full with a football team , so we had to persuade them to make us a sandwich. But did discover that the Novatel hotel is just five minutes walk and has a restaurant/bar/swimming pool.

@John Ball: I was at St Yan "Euro Fly In" Thursday and Friday, though not flying , and found it rather disappointing. When were you there, and how (dis)pleased were you?

I only stopped there for two hours on the Thursday, as I was flying from Annecy to Autun. It was fairly quiet, but I was expecting that for a weekday- I hear from friends who were there at the weekend that it was busy. I also hear that the entry fee of 5 euro's included the evening meal for the campers, which is good value.
