Duxford 'Pilot' Magazine Bonus Day Saturday 22nd May 2010

The next Duxford Bonus Day is Saturday 22nd May 2010. And its a special Bonus day for Pilot readers. Arrive in any type of light aircraft and enjoy the discounts and benefits below -- and, of course, meet your forum friends.

'Pilot' have laid on three of the new light sport aircraft for you to have a look at and some demo flights will be possible. You'll also be able to meet the 'Pilot' team.

If you're familiar with Duxford Bonus Days and the discounts on offer, call 01223 833376 for PPR and possible slot booking. If you want more details, read on:

Duxford is home the Imperial War Museum and must be the premier destination for GA pilots in Europe. Most weekends through the flying season, although there are no guarantees, you are quite likely to see warbirds flying – Spitfire, Hurricane, B17, Catalina and other rare types are based at Duxford.

The Bonus days offer great discounted prices: On 22nd May, pilots and passengers will enjoy half-price landing fees and much reduced museum admission. Land for £7; museum entry is £7 for most adults and children come in free.

On Bonus days only, the Briefing Room and balcony on the first floor of the historic Control Tower is freely available for Bonus pilots and their passengers. The £22+ million ‘AirSpace’ project is now fully open – really a ‘must-see’ and great for children as well as adults.

As well as Bonus Days, Duxford welcomes FLY-INs. Any group of pilots planning to visit Duxford can arrange special prices in advance, subject to a minimum of about 6 aircraft (for discounted landing fees) and/or 20 people (for discounted museum admission as well). This does not apply to event days, and it must be pre-arranged in writing with the airfield manager, Frank Marson.

Further information about the Bonus Days and information for fly-in visitors can be found on the web site IWM Duxford - Europe's premier aviation museum:
Imperial War Museum Duxford > Flying at Duxford (IWM Duxford - Europe's premier aviation museum...)

The airfield team will be delighted to hear from forumites (call for PPR and briefing 01223 833376 ) and to see you on the day. On busy days, such as this Bonus day, we will operate a broad slot system, to avoid too much congestion. The phones are very busy on Bonus mornings, so call well in advance if you can, to ensure you get your chosen time.

Just for people who don’t know, I should declare my interest. I’m a casual FISO at Duxford. I’m also a pilot who thinks the place is pretty marvellous.

Alan, I have no wish to upset you as I believe you do a good job and you obviously feel passionate about Duxford.
However nice you are I cannot say the same for the policy makers there. The recent publication that they are stopping people from flying in to the airshows flies in the face of their apparent welcome to GA.
I tried to arrange a group fly in as you know but was met with a " too much for us "" attitude.

It does rather seem that they have a strange "we want you when it suits us " attitude.

I don't like the sort of people that talk to you one day and snub you on the next day and I feel that this is the way Duxford are going.

That's a shame its a nice place to fly into.

That's not good - I was planning to fly into a few of the airshows this year.

Alan, I'm sorry I won't make it. Duxford is the one place I try to fly into at least once a year and I have always been made very welcome even on the occasion when I had caused them no end of worry so it's sad to see adverse comments. Hope to be able to fly in later in the year and, as usual, will bring the supplementary landing fee.

Hatz:

Don't worry, you won't upset me

I remember our conversation about a fly-in. I didn't realise that you had had problems in arranging it. Duxford does welcome fly-ins, so there is obviously a problem here that needs looking at. If you want to email me with the details, I'll happily talk to the airfield management.

Alan-D and everybody:

Duxford management have decided that GA may not fly into the May and October airshows this year. The Flying Legends show in July and the September airshows are unaffected and GA is welcome as always. people who want to fly in should call the tower to get a copy of the AIC and slot booking request.

The May & October policy is a financial decision. The Head of Airfield issued this statement:

"It is indeed the case that we are not permitting visiting GA aircraft for
our May and October Air Shows in 2010. The reason for this is entirely
business based. Our experience averaged over the past 5 years has shown that
because of unpredictable weather we have achieved less than 20% of prebooked
arrivals. In order to support the GA visitors there are a number of
associated costs, hire of minibuses, additional FISO and support staff etc.
These are real costs to the museum which over the past 5 years have amounted
to an extra cost of £120 for each GA visitor.
We are continuing to welcome GA visitors in July and September where the
numbers justify our expenditure.
Whilst I regret the decision which has had to be taken, in the current
financial climate I must ensure the business viability of the Air Shows to
ensure that they continue."

Just for information, the airshow landing fee is £20 for any aircraft, large or small.

Hope this helps.
Alan.

There will be three of the new generation light sports aircraft at Duxford on this Bonus Day - the Aquila, the Piper Sport and the Remos, as well as an Extra, all for visitors to have a look at and a possibility of a flight. What's the future of light aviation, the modern C172s etc, or the Piper Sport style of aircraft?

As usual, call for PPR / slot and a briefing, but don't call until Monday, please, as the tower team will be busy with the airshow on 15th and 16th.
