How to get an SEP Class rating?

Hello there,

I am wondering if anyone can shed any light on how I can obtain an SEP rating? I already have a CPL with a multi engine IR and completed my CPL skills test in a multi engine. Therefore I did have an MEP but that has now expired. It is not clear from LASORS exactly what pre requisites are needed for the SEP. I have never obtained a PPL as I gained my CPL on an integrated course. I know I will need to complete a skills test of some sort with a CAA examiner. Does anyone know what this involves exactly and whether I can just book to do the skills test having not flown SEPs in over 2 years.

You need to complete the SEP Class rating skill test with an Examiner. He will complete the form SRG1119 and you send it to the CAA together with the appropriate fee and they will issue you with the rating. If you look at Form SRG 1157 you will get an idea what you have to do. If you think you can pas the test without any practice there is no other training required.

If you haven't been near a SEP in that long its going to cost you serious amounts of money.

Last guy I did from oxford in a similar postion it cost him 1K plus to get it and personally I think the examiner gave him the benefit of the doudt cause of the name behined his training and giving him credit for being rusty. His mate who went for the test after refusing brush up training had the most spectacular fail that I have ever heard about. Not just a issue but a complete fail of every single section which takes some doing.

how can someone be so bad with all the other experience they have?

What 2 years? I was away from SEP flying for almost 15 years and spent just 1.5 hours refreshing then straight into a test on the same day and passed. This was with Dickie Bird at Wycombe Air Centre who doesn't sign licences lightly.

A few months later, I did some IR exercises for an hour then did my SEP IR rating.

The PPL/SEP skills I'd learned 20 years ago didn't just disappear with years of multi turbine and heavy jet in the meantime but I think there are some instructors/examiners who might like to make it hard for people who already have the flying job they so desire.

Thanks everyone for your replies especially Mad Jock for your cynical but potentially realistic opinion! I'll have a refresher and see how I get on before taking it any further.

Maty, if you are in the Midlands, drop me a PM. I do a surprising number of SEP rating tests for ex integrated guys. I rarely takes more than a couple of hours including the test.

I agree with the chaps that say that you can take any number of years off. I was 5 years and went straight into the test in the RHS after an hour. But I had been flying something else 5 days a week in between.

It could have been a factor that the US training side of things had just started up and the students had only ever flown IFR in the UK.

Sounds like Bose-x is your man. I wish you every success. Look out the bloody window!!!!! is the best hint I can give you (PS i need to tell myself that as well, which is why I prefer being in the RHS as there is nothing to look or fixate on)
