JAA PPL Expired - how to renew

Hi All

I got my PPL in late 2003 in the US, then flew a casually back in the UK a for the next 2-3 years and kept my hours up.

Since then ive been unable to keep it up for financial, circumstantial reasons

I last flew in 2006 and my license expired after 5 yrs in 2008. I couldnt renew it as I wasnt current and didnt have a medical.

I would love to get back on the horse but wondered if I can just get a medical, some instruction and do a currency check or do I have to go through the whole thing again and take the practical test etc.

Im fairly sure i wont have to take the exams again..

Any help appreciated or offeres of instructors who can help.

Im based near fairoaks, surrey

Thanks

Ollie

You need a flight with an Examiner, I think. My JAA PPL lapsed in 2006 (after 5 years) and I renewed it last year with a flight. It is a bit like the PPL skills test, with a dead reckoning map+stopwatch exercise, stalls, etc.

To have your licence reissued, all you need is a current medical certificate and an Aircraft Rating that has not expired by more than 5 years Complete this form

The aircraft rating can be re-validated by test which probably means you need some training, how much will depend upon a number of factors such as total experience, how long since you last flew and how familiar you are with the UK way of doing things. So long as its not more than 5 years since your last rating expired the examiner can sign you up; over 5 years it has to go to Gatwick with a rating renewal payment.
