Suggestion no.1 - post in Private flying, not professional training. They will have a better idea of PPL schools.

Suggestion no. 2 - only ever pay as you go. Do not pay in advance. You tell Cabair that you will take your business elsewhere (and I'm sure there are equally as good/bad places to learn) if they won't let you fly weekends and pay for only what you fly at the end of the lesson.

Cheers

Id strongly suggest Bonus Aviation at Cranfield. Aircraft are good, instructors are fun and good at their job, nice atmosphere about the school and cranfield is a superb place to fly from.

Ask a few questions!

I would very strongly recomend that you take a good look around the market and ask a few questions like:-

Are landings included in the price?

Is more than 5 min of pre/post flight briefing included in the price?

Is a fuel surcharge included in the price?

What happens if your account goes in to the red, do you loose the discount on flights already made?

Is VAT included in the price?

Ask the question of Cabair, Airways flying club (at Booker), WLAC at White Waltham, Billins air Services at Cranfield and SFC at Stapleford.

And then can I have 10% of what I have saved you for the advice.... Please?

I agree with ChiefTonkTraps. Bonus Aviation is a good flying school. The instructors and staff are very nice, down to earth and friendly. I have flown at a few different flying schools in the past and when I moved to MK 2yrs ago I found Bonus Aviation a flying school that was easy going and made training enjoyable.

Good luck with your choice. I'm sure you will make the right choice for you.

I second the opinions regarding Bonus... Very relaxed atmosphere, no pressure to pay up front, nice people.

Well, here's a vote in favour of Cabair. I passed my ppl with Cabair at Denham in 1996 and have been a member ever since. I passed my IMC with them in April and have just started flying from Elstree as well as Denham so I would happily reccomend them to anyone.

From Hounslow your nearest airfields are Heathrow (AFAIK there's no school there!) Denham, White Waltham, Fairoaks and Booker (Wycombe)
When you've bought your cheap car I suggest you drive to each and visit the various flying schools. (Be aware that at Denham there are two schools in different parts of the airfield and they're very different).
See what kind of reception you get at each, ask your questions and then decide.
Come back and let us know how you get on.

Hounslow to Cranfield without a car is a pretty murderous journey.

With a car it's only slightly less unpleasant:

Try a nearer school first.

Did my initial training in the UK in 2003 at that time Cabair were a sausage factory and the students just a number, I went else where. Unless it has changed allot I would try a smaller more personal school, you get the same qualification where ever you go but you may just enjoy getting there a bit more.

If you're going to look at Denham then you should also pop into The Pilot Centre.
