Flying into Meribel altiport LFKX

Hi,

Has anyone done this recently - procedures to be followed, any good contacts there?

Thanks! Sam.

Sam

I have flown from there. It is incredibly short like going off a launch ramp.

Flew from there in a jodel on Skis. The airfield (Launch Ramp) is 5000+ feet up and from memory 400 metres long on an incredibly steep incline.
Takeoff down hill land uphill. After takeoff fall for airspeed

Landing after 200 feet forget a go around with full flap as you wont and full power after touchdown or you wont make it over the ramp.

Courcheval over the mountain is like Heathrow in comparison.

Not for the faint hearted.

Sorry dont have a contact number.

Is it true that you can't land there unless you've done some training with them?

Google "Altiport rating". Gives a number of links. Memorable snippets include "Not for the faint-hearted" and "You need at least 200-300 hours" (before you train).

I'm sure someone will be along soon with more knowledge.

YouTube - Flying les Trois Vallees in the snow HD

Take a look at this excellent clip of Meribel and dramatic landing and takeoff on a glacier.
I was Skiing there and did some flying in one of these aircraft with an instructor.
A must do as its amazing. Sadly not my video but had a simular experience there.

Méribel

Here is a link to all the airfield details

400 m x 15 m
Pente 6%, concave puis convexe (6% - 11% - 4%)
Revêtement enrobé
Balisage non
Altitude bas : 5.550 ft / 1.690m
haut : 5.635 ft / 1.720m
Note airfield length is 400 metres bad enough at sea level never mind at 5550 feet one end 5635 the other
also check the gradients above

Ive been skiing in this area, that video is fantastic. I'd love to fly the same one day!

Who do I contact to enquire about having a flight with an instructor over there?

This company Whitetracks seem to put together flights for non flying punters.
I was also Skiing there and just turned up, showed my licence to a very friendly french instructor and took left seat for some mountain flying.
If your a pilot it is a must do in your life especially the glacier landings

You can do a Altiport (sign off) rating that consists of around 4 hours, I did mine at Corchevel but it can also be done at Meribel. If you do the full mountain rating it covers you for most of the Altiports etc.

This is well worth doing and prob 90 some of the most stunning and seat of yer pants flying you will do!!!

The Altiport sign off lasts for 6 months before needing a currency check.

Enjoy
