Formation over Shrops / Cheshire?? trailing "smoke"

Somebody here might know the answer to the above please.

Driving up the A41, heading North, at about 1700hrs, I saw a twin formation heading South....one looked like a Spit, the other looked like a high wing tail dragger....both trailing display "smoke".....and interesting and enjoyable sight...so I am merely curious as to "who / what / where " given it was, as I said, an unusual sight.
