Each aircraft with an EASA C of A is required to be maintained in accordance with an approved maintenance programme(AMP). M.A.201(a)4 refers and M.A.302 refers.
The AMP will specify what maintenance is carried out and when it is to be carried out. If an Annual inspection is required by the AMP then it must be carried out annually. If the AMP requires maintenance checks at specific flying hour intervals then this is what is required. Often an AMP based on flying hours will also have a calendar limit defined to ensure that low utilisation aircraft will have the maintenance necessary for it to remain airworthy carried out.
In the UK if the aircraft is 2730 kgs or below the AMP can be based upon the CAA generic LAMP programme. http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/cap766.pdf
The maintenance check cycle in the LAMP requires 50hr, 150hr and annual inspections.
