PA-31 Navajo crashed in Richmoned BC, Canada during the final approach
Two people died in a Richmond plane crash Thursday night.
According to emergency services the pair were deceased when firefighters arrived at the scene on the 12500-block of Vickers Way.
RCMP Asst. Commissioner Peter German said the plane crashed into a parkade and no one on the ground was injured.
"We're very lucky, we're very fortunate in that regard," German said.
The dead pair were the only ones onboard.
Bill Yearwood, of the Safety Transportation Board of Canada, said the light twin-engine plane — a PA-31 Navajo — crashed near the Ikea store.
Vancouver airport flight control staff lost contact with the plane just before the 10:15 p.m. crash.
The plane was following an Air Canada Airbus and was cleared for landing when it crashed.
Richmond resident Erin Boivin said she heard a loud bang, then looked outside and noticed smoke and power lines on fire in an industrial area on Vickers Way.
Boivin said she also saw "small bits and pieces of plane debris."
A witness told Global News that the plane was swerving before going into a nosedive and striking the pavement behind a furniture store.
There was then a large explosion.
Another witness, Nick, said he saw the plane go in nose first and go “kaboom.”
Another witness said two police cars drove through security gates in order to get close to the crash scene.
There were no injuries reported on the ground.
