For those that are interested we have set up a forum for the Round Britain Race in 2012. Please do let us know what you would like to see in such a race from an aviation point of view.

Thanks
Stuart

I look forward to sharing the A92, A98, and A96 with 100 extra cars, whose drivers have boozed the previous night away, racing from Dundee to Inverness.
Why not keep the car racing part to the same distance, but round the M25?
The A9 north of the Cromarty Bridge, and the A836, A838, etc part will be really welcomed by other drivers.

Someone is looking at organising an inspiring and exciting event and how do some of us react?

"Oh, I'll no be able to get to the shops because of all the cars."

"Oh, we'll have to make sure nobody drinks anything or enjoys it at all."

Nobody's mentioned hi-vis yet.

I can't wait to be part of it - I'm one of the £100 cup of coffee lot and I and many other pilot's need a kick up the ar$e to get us doing something more interesting.

Stuart, as part of the social inclusion (and I know the insurance types might suck through their teeth at this) might it be possible to get kids who for reasons social, financial or otherwise couldn't think of getting involved onto one of the legs in a car, boat or aircraft? And then sponsor interested kids through driving test, boating training, flying training and then get them involved in the next race and so on? I was involved with a similar thing in the donkey walloping world a few years ago and the change that a relatively small sum can make to a life is incredible. Best of luck, mate. I'll do my best to be part of it.

I flew around Britain a couple of years back for charity in a microlight - Raised £30,000.

We all know that a GA aircraft would whoop the ass of a car or boat in a race - weather permitting. So why don't you make it a closer race. Powerboats v. Cars v. Microlights.

At the end you could check the fuel used - my Jab burns 8lt @ 80kts.

I can see it now... The fastest and most environmental friendly way to travel is.. Flying!
Stick that up your Bugatti Clarkson ;-)

Yep, I'm up for it!

Hi All,

Only seems like yesterday that I started this thread and it is almost a year.

Things have been very busy with the event and we will be launching the air race at the Aero Expo next weekend.

Please do feel free to come and have a chat and ask any questions.

Regards
Stuart

Aviation Events

Hi All,

As part of our building of the Round Britain 2012 (rb12.com) event we are looking at putting on a number of aviation events next year. We did the same this year with the Sea element and the British Powerboat Festival and want to build all elements up in the lead up to RB12.

We are proposing to run our first event alongside AeroExpo Europe and the format is to be kept simple and straight forward:

Day 1 - Fly to Bitburg in company. Briefing packs provided and a lead aircraft. Local visit to a certain beer company and an evening function.

Day 2 - local flying treasure hunt. Evening function.

Day 3 - flight back to UK.

Both transit days might include a land on route. All landing fees would be included as well as two nights accommodation and entry into the show.

Whilst not a race there is to be cash and in kind prizes.

The cost is likely to be in the region of £750 ex vat based on an aircraft with 2 POB. The hope is that we can offer an early payment option and there is also going to be a late entry fee.

Comments and suggestions would be most welcome and if interested in entering then please drop me a line via THE ROUND BRITAIN RACE 2012

Regard
Stuart

It all sounds great and after tonights lottery results are in I'll be able to choose which mode of transport I fancy. An FGP is favourite at the mo

But, and it's a J-LO (big butt) keep well away from the Olympics, as there will be loads of airspace restrictions. And these will not be limited to London as many venues are spread around the country.

Best of British, hope you succeed.

Hi All,

Some further news on the Bitburg event that we sent to everyone last month. Firstly, thank you to all those that replied with the positive comments, very helpful.

We have now firmed up the event and the press release (on the RB12 forum) which is being released today is below:

Round Britain 2012 – RB12 and AviationExpo Europe Announce Joint Venture
RB12 and AviationExpo Europe today announced that they will be joining forces to provide a unique opportunity for pilots to get a head start in their preparations for RB12 and at the same time visit the dedicated European General Aviation exhibition in 2011. AviationExpo Europe offers a showcase for everything from ultralights through to business jets and all the latest in General Aviation at Bitburg Airport during the period 27-29 May 2011.

The RB12 team will be running an aviation event, with UK based pilots being offered a planned trip to AviationExpo at Bitburg Airport in Germany. European based pilots will also be joining in the fun at the event.

A brief outline is as follows:

Friday 27 May - A breakfast briefing in Lydd Airport followed by a flight to Bitburg.

Tour the Bitburg beer factory.

Evening reception – Sponsored by AV Buyer Europe.

Saturday 28 May - A local area treasure hunt (by aircraft!)

Evening reception and Prize giving – Sponsored by AV Buyer Europe.

Sunday 29 May – Return flight to UK.

The cost for any European aircraft to join the Saturday event with one night’s accommodation will be £250 (ex vat) per aircraft.

Stuart Mckean, RB12 Director commented, “Having sponsored the British Powerboat Festival in Cowes this August with great success, we now want to show as many prospective entrants as possible what RB12 Air is aiming to deliver. AviationExpo Europe is a great event for us to demonstrate our commitment to hosting a first class Air event. This will be a great opportunity for pilots to experience the flavour of an event of the scale and ambition of RB12.”

Bitburg 27-29 May 11

Hi All,

With the stunning weather last week i managed to get the recce to Bitburg done.

The event is really going to be good fun and what an excuse to use your aircraft. The route starts at Lydd in Kent who have duty free fuel and an offer of discounts on top of that, TBA. Breakfast and Route/Met briefing before setting off is the plan.

We went slightly South to give the best route to Bitburg and enjoyed a very easy route for those that might be concerned. Great views on route and managed to go through France and Luxemburg before getting to Germany in 2.5hrs.

Bitburg is an old US Airbase and has a runway to prove it ! We where met by Jan from ATC who could not help us enough, even putting our club PA28 in the hangar! I can say the local brew, Bitburg Beer tastes as good as i remember it.

We have now confirmed our local flight route for the Sat of the show and with the first turning point being a certain race track called the Nurbergring. After seeing what can only be described as a very long track it was off to follow the Rhine before following the Mosel valley.

A flight of 1.3hr and some great views along the way. We then filled up with fuel and set off back to UK.

We have booked accommodation, sorted the route(s), got sponsors for both evenings functions and a tour of the beer factory. Do you need any more excuses to go flying?

Welcome any thoughts or comments on this event and be delighted if you can join us. Do feel free to get in touch.

Kind regards
Stuart
