Hite, Private Strip, Utah

Hi all,

In my 'Flyers Recreation Guide, SouthWest', one strip listed is Hite, in Utah, next to Lake Powell. On the sectional (Denver) the strip is listed as Private. Some heavy googling gets me no closer to any details about it; does anyone know if its still open, and if one can just drop in to camp?

On google Earth it's at 47"53'41N, 110"22'44W

Can anyone suggest any good forums for strip pilots in the US southwest, too?

Hite has a write-up in "The Flyer's Recreation Guide - SW" by Reed White but this dates from 1999. I've flown over Hite a few times, but it's in the National Park and the 2000' rule discourages casual investigation. Reed says it is 09-27, 2200', 3840' elev. with a 9% grade (which seems quite a lot, but that's what he says) to the E. It looked fairly unobstructed but would obviously require a calm day and suitable aircraft performance. Note the sectional has the word 'Hazardous' appended!!

I've also driven past it and thought it looked quite impressive if a little inaccessible up on it's mesa.

A pilot based at Canyonlands (Moab) has written a Utah back country strip guide and a call to the FBO (Aero West Aviation 435-259-7421) there might elicit more up to date info.

Reed's book is available from Arizona Aviation Supplies. Sorry I can't remember the name of the back country guide, but the FBO will know what I'm talking about. It was full of places that wouldn't suit my 172!

Nice one! Thanks! Now to try and shoehorn a lightly loaded C172RG in there...
