Thumbs up World Aerobatic Championships in the UK this year!

Haven't seen anything about this on Pprune so far; do assembled Ppruners know that the premier aerobatics event in the world will be held at Silverstone in August this year?

Did I hear a rumour that Silverstone plan to re-open the runway for fixed wing arrivals? (Other than competitors obviously)

On the website they're saying no, but suggest flying into Turweston (4 miles away) and arranging ground transport from there.

I have the same info from the organisers, there will be shuttle buses from Turweston. Hotel accomodation may be difficult but camping is available nearby.

There is more information here

WAC 2009 Admin - index page

The contest will run over almost 2 weeks at Silverstone. The public are welcome to come and watch; the classic aerobatic contest will run up until the last Friday. This will be very technically demanding aerobatics but flown without smoke etc. so interesting to watch, but not an airshow.

There will be all of the worlds top aerobatic pilots/teams there, the Russians, the Americans, the French etc. 49 pilots from 13 countries.

This year the British team is stronger than ever and has been on a 2 year build up to the event. You will be able to follow progress with daily results and standings on the web.

On the final Saturday, there will be the Freestyle part of the contest. This is really a separate competition and the worlds top pilots will get to do their own 'anything goes' routine with smoke. Silverstone are also planning an airshow around this so the Saturday should be a great day to go. Silverstone have yet to announce the details and entry charge for the Saturday.
I believe all other days will be free to watch the competition, although this is not confirmed yet.

It will not be possible to fly into Silverstone during this period. In fact the area is a temporary restriced area for the whole 2 week competition so infringements will be treated very seriously.

It will be possible to fly into Turweston and transport arrangements are being planned. Arriving at Silverstone by car will also be possible.

So, put the date in your diary: 19-28th Aug for the contest and Sat 29th Aug for the Freestyle and airshow.

And keep up to date with the British teams progress on the web

I'll be there - where should I sit?

I have tickets for the Saturday (I'll be there with my family), and I was wondering if anyone could advise me about where the best place to sit might be to see all the day's action. I've only been to Silverstone once before (for a motoring event), and then sat at Abbey. With the box being south of the main runway, Abbey strikes me as being a good place for the WAC too, but would a good view of the box mean a poorer view of the airshow components?

I'd be grateful for any advice as I don't want ear-ache (from bored wife and kids) and I most certainly do want neck-ache from watching the flying!

Cheers,

See the plan below on page 4.

http://www.aerobatics.org.uk/pdf/WAC...nfoMaps_v1.pdf

There will be a grandstand open as well as a public area. The intention is to allow the public to get quite close to the hangar tents so that they can see the aircraft. There will probably be a rope barrier with the aircraft a few meters away.

I was at Silverstone today helping with some setting up. The facilities will be the best of any world aerobatic championship ever held. This is probably the strongest British team ever at one of these events, so it should be have lots of local interest as well as the worlds top pilots.

As a taster some videos are here.

Probably the best marked out performance box I've seen from the air too - couldn't miss it today!
