Yes you need it for your first solo, so the sooner the better really, then all you have to worry about are your landings 
I had my solo delayed untill I could get my medical, and went solo as soon as I showed the certificate to the instructor.

You can fly as a student on the NPPL medical declaration, irrespective to whethter you are on an NPPL or JAA-PPL course. This may be a cheaper option though you will need a current Class 2 (or 1) to get a JAR-PPL issued.
If there are any doubts about your eligibility for a JAR Class 2 then it's best to get it sorted as soon as possible.
