Unhappy Fatal Crash At Fenland Toady

Just been told about a Fatal crash at Fenland, found this on Google.

February 2009

Air accident investigators are examining the wreckage of a light aircraft whose pilot was killed when it crashed shortly after take-off.
The 50-year-old man, whose family have been informed of the tragedy, is understood to have made a may-day call moments after leaving Fenland Airfield near Holbeach, Lincolnshire.

The single-seater aircraft came down at about 11am on Saturday around 50 yards from the end of the airfield's runway, which is close to the village of Holbeach St Johns.

Speaking at the scene of the crash, Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) senior inspector Tim Atkinson said he believed the plane was taking off when the accident happened.

Mr Atkinson told the Press Association that investigators would try to build up a comprehensive picture of the flight up until the moment of the accident.

The expert said: "It's much too early to begin to speculate as to the possible cause. We were informed of the accident very promptly after it happened and we will speaking to witnesses who will be able to help with the investigation."

The inspector added that the history of the aircraft and the pilot would form part of the AAIB's inquiry into the death.

"I believe the accident happened shortly after take-off," he said.

"Over the coming hours and days, we will be gathering as much evidence as we can to determine what has happened."

Inspector Andy Ham, of Lincolnshire Police, confirmed that the plane was privately-owned and that no other aircraft were involved in the incident. The officer added: "At this moment in time there is no reason to suggest any suspicious circumstances. Initial information suggests as soon as he (the pilot) set off, he made this mayday call and attempted to land."
