Hi All.

It looks as though the ever quiet and unactive Pembrey could become busier than most across Wales due to the local developments.

The below is a Press Release from Pembrey airport themselves.

Pembrey Airport to Land Top Sports Clientele



Pembrey, a privately-owned commercial airport in west Wales, looks set to capture contracts serving prestigious sporting events and professionals.

Air Charter Companies. have selected Pembrey to provide landing, refueling, hard standing and other facilities to at least 14+ executive jets carrying golf’s elite to the world-famous Ryder Cup 2010.

And it looks as though international racing professionals and fans will be making a beeline to Pembrey in 2009. That’s when nearby Ffos Las, the U.K’s first new National Hunt racecourse in 80 years, opens its doors for the first time.

This multi-million dollar complex will soon offer a cluster of residential, hospitality and commercial developments, plus an equestrian centre, racing school and equine training establishments. Pembrey Airport is practically on the doorstep, and poised to offer whatever equestrian air facilities racing professionals may need.

Since location, location, location is everything, Pembrey Airport will also benefit from its proximity to a Jack Nicklaus golf course, Pembrey Motor Circuit and Burry Port Marina. The port of Cork and the insatiable racing appetites of the Irish are only 40 km. away.

Pembrey’s On-site Advantages

Pembrey Airport has all the infrastructure and operational licenses to accept commercial traffic. its logistics experience will stand it in good stead for the co-ordination and personal attention to special requirements expected by world-class sports organizations – including out-of-hours refueling.


In 2007, Pembrey completed Phase 1 of its development project, extending its runway by 50% in preparation for heavier landing loads and larger aircraft in coming years.

To date, more than £3.5 million has been invested at Pembrey. Other facilities available include:

• Passenger terminal with check-in area and restaurant offering full catering facilities
• ATC
• Extensive (currently free) passenger parking.
• Aircraft hangars and hard-standing

And the big bonus: Pembrey is uniquely favoured in having access to over 5000 acres/2000 hectares of level development land.

Phase Two Investment

Discussions are ongoing between Pembrey’s management and potential investors for the next phase of development. Key goals: to improve the capability to handle larger aircraft, as well as providing streamlined and specialist services demanded by today’s air travelers – both consumers and commercial clients.

Despite the recession, Pembrey M.D. Winston Thomas remains quietly confident. “As London-area airport expansions get increasingly bogged down, the smart money is going to move to regional facilities like Pembrey, that have the support of both local and national authorities, can handle traffic from both the UK and Europe, and plenty of room for future growth.”


Looks promising although time will tell.

Why would anyone fly into Pembrey for the Ryder cup when Celtic Manor (where the event is taking place) is half way between Cardiff and Filton.

Someone's living in cloud cuckoo land.

Why would anyone fly into Pembrey for the Ryder cup
Cost? I doubt Cardiff or Filton are cheap for parking fees?

1) Executive jets don't use 800 metre runways (not if they have any sense!)

2) People who operate executive jets tend not to worry about how much the parking fees are.

3) People who operate executive jets use them for the convenience - getting CLOSER, not further from the eventual destination is the general idea.

The concept of cheapest parking for your 100 pound bacon buttie is a long way removed from what the customer wants.

Like I said before - cloud cuckoo land.

Why would anyone fly into Pembrey for the Ryder cup when Celtic Manor (where the event is taking place) is half way between Cardiff and Filton.
And virtually on Upfield Farm's threshold. Would be interesting seeing a Citation get in

Pembrey is in the middle of............nowhere really interesting. And of course, movements are (were) restricted because of the ranges right on the doorstep.

Wait till it's called "London-Pembrey International" and then you should worry

Good old Winston! Best of luck to him! Unfortunately Pembrey has very little parking, certainly not enough for 14 executive jets!

Nearest decent runway is at Swansea. Biz jets in there regularly.

Don't hold your breath over Swansea, the place is feeling like a morgue. A general malise has decended on the place. Airport staff are totally demoralised with constant rumours over the place being "run down" by the current lease holder.

Swansea is a great site but since the demise of Air Wales the lease holder has apparently lost complete interest in the airport. The lighting has gone into ruin resulting in daylight operations only, the terminal building looks like something out of Jurassic Park since the cladding was taken off it and never replaced and rumour has it that the NDB and DME are the next things to be taken out of service.

Don't think that the business jets will be interested for much longer.

Come on Swansea Council, if the current lease holder has lost interest in the place, can someone be found who can develop it to its real potential? There are a great bunch of guys at the airport trying to make it work, but get constantly s**t on by their boss, the lease holder, when trying to get a few quid to keep the operation going to CAA standards.

Swansea NDB is already NOTAM'ed as u/s and I can verify that it is not operating.

Also, I received nothing off the DME, no IDENT, no distance readout, no GS, nothing.

The present leaseholder is a waste of space, a total oxygen thief, and does absolutely nothing for the airport. The sooner someone buys him out the better.
