Stornoway?

Does anybody have any info on suitability of Stornoway as opposed to Wick for trans-Atlantic arrivals.
eg food,? hotel?,maintenance?, level of welcome? costs?

I may be biased because I used to live there, but Stornoway would have my vote every time. Great airport and the chaps in the tower and on the ground are great. I have never been out in Wick but Stornoway has a reasonable night life and there are hotels for most budgets. There are some great places to eat as well. Speak to Stuart the catering manager at the terminal for the latest low down. There is no maintanence but a large hangar and you might get a cuppa from the guys at the SAR unit. Call the tower and ask to speak to the on duty ATCO for tips, costs etc.

Fuel is not a problem and alot cheaper than wick.

Food as much black pudding as you can eat. Scran in the terminal is pretty good. Even better if you go into town Thai cafe get's my vote. Hotels are not the best in the world but you will survive. Just watch it on Sunday's if you have a day off. There is nothing to do and if you get some wee free hotel owner they might try and take your telly away then loose the key until Monday.

Your welcome will be very friendly.

Maintence there is none. The nearest legal Engineer to both Wick and Stornaway is in Dundee.

Landings and parking are the same as its a HIAL airport.

If the wx does turn to poo you have localiser approaches in STY and also a pretty good licensed short runway if the x-wind is to strong on the big runway.

Both airports and towns have decent enough facilities if you're just passing through, however i recon far north aviation would look after you a lot better as a trans-atlantic pilot.

They have a lot of experience of helping pond hoppers, and can provide facilities such as life raft hire/de-hire.

Do you need more specific info on either town?

Stornoway

Hi,
Well there has been some changes made here! you will find they are a very friendly lot on the island i am sure that if you call into the Flying club there you can have a cuppa with ken and he will tell you all you need to know about the place! but what has already been pointed out there is only a couple of bars and a garage open on sunday here, there is no maintainance at the airport and no engineers! if you need any specific info drop me a line i will find out for you!

All the above are pretty spot on. I guess it depends how self sufficient you are. Everyone at SYY is friendly and helpful and will go out of their way to help. But there is no real operation there based around ferry flights. Though there are a few who do go there. Far North at Wick on the other hand exist for this purpose and cab cater for your every need. It isn't for free though!
