Cheapest SEP hire in Southern England
Hi,
Anyone knows which aerodrome or flying club has the cheapest light aircraft (one that can be flown with a PPL) hire in the southern England, particularly around Surrey and Hampshire?
Popham airfield has C-150 aerobat going for £95 wet (need 100hr TT). I'm really considering joining them. Any advice is very much appreciated.

Hi,
It depends how many hours you are looking for? The more you need to cheaper it will be and you could end up getting some nice aircraft for not much more than that.

shoreham
this is a very useful thread lets try to keep it moving!.
cheapest i could find at shoreham (with out buying block) was £110ph wet on a 152.
im still on the look out for a bargain although ive realised that sfh isnt really the way to go anymore A share seems the natural choice.
ciao

This could be a truly excellent thread!!
As you can see, i'm from ooop norf, and maybe it would be a good idea to give this thread some real 'legs.'
I am still battling to find relatively 'cheap' self fly hire, of something with four seats in my area but am not having a deal of luck.
With every other headine being 'credit crunch this' and 'recession that,' the constant advice from financial 'experts' is to get the best deals possible from price comparison websites. Maybe it would be a good idea to start something of a similar ilk with reference to keeping our flying costs to the minimum that they need to be.
Cheaper flying means more flying. More flying means more experience. More experience means better, safer pilots.
I don't want to hijack colonialflyers thread, apologies if it looks like thats what i'm trying to do, but threads regarding the cheapest flying come thick and fast. Maybe we could help each other out and put it all in one place.
Lets try and keep this thread up the top of the private flying page.

If you are doing the hours then a share is the way to go, our Falconar at Goodwood breaks even with the Popham C150 after about 1 1/2 hours/ month, works out at about £48/hour if you do 5 hours a month, £40/hour for 10 hours and cheaper the more you do. This includes fuel and with only 6 shares gives much better availability

redhill aerodrome "only"charge £2.88 for t+gs and around £12.88 to land, compared to shoreham its great and no rediculous go around fine.headcorn have even cheaper rates. winter is soon upon us and tarmac is good but look out for not just cheap flying rates but user friendly cheaper airfields.

I would also like to know where the cheaper aeroplanes around Bristol/Gloucester area or within 1 hours drive from there.
I'll be starting the CPL/IR soon, and will still require approx 15-20 hrs PIC time to meet the 100 hrs PIC so would like to fly at weekends.
Thanks

If Headcorn is in your radius the Tiger Club offer their Turbulents at £60/hr. All you need is to like single-seat open-cockpit taildraggers - which sounds like heaven to me!

Would time on a at Turbulents £60/hr count towards my SEP revalidation's hours?
Because less face it most 3 axis microlight are more like good old Group A aeroplanes (apart from perform much better) and I can't count these hours in revalidation my PPL.

I used to fly a Luton Minor from White Waltham. Shares were around £600, monthly costs of around £40 and there was no hourly fee, just put your own fuel in (it used about 2 gallons an hour). I am pretty sure there is still a Luton Minor there.
The Luton Minor is still there, but collecting dust at the back of the hangar having not flow for 4(?) years. The main reason for this seems to be that airbus girl went off to fly airliners and lost her GA routes not just her, but many, many of the group have gone off to their dream job (flying A340, B747, B757, A320 over the last decade) but they no longer get time to make holes in the local sky in a Luton. Actually the current group, spread throughout the country, seem to have lost the drive to get "Piglet" flying again and time just flies past while they are presumably still paying £3k a year to park it there. Its a real shame as its actually quite a good aircraft, not just an hours builder, but a fun aviation experience that will freeze the grin to your face! Its only really cost effective if you fly it lots though. The more you fly the hourly rate tends towards the fuel cost. You could realistically fly this Luton for about £25 per hour all in if you are able to fly 20 hours a month.

However, dont expect to just turn up at Headcorn and fly one. The Tiger Club (quite sensibly) requires all prospective Turbulent pilots to be current on their Tiger Moths first, as although it flies nothing like a Turbulent, if you can fly a Tiger Moth well, you should have no problem in a Turb!
