Hangerage near Salisbury, UK

Hello there,

Has anyone got any suggestions for hangerage around the Salisbury area, apart from Old Sarum, Compton or Thruxton. (I do have lots of military connection but believe that dirty civies cant enter bases unescorted). I have seen a few strips around but have lost touch with the farm strip scene in the last couple of years.

I am looking to hangar a beautiful 1949 short wing piper taildragger. He and i have flown together much and we have had lots of experience of operating from and living at strips, both short and long. I unfortunately have to be a commercial pilot but have lots of varied GA experience.

We are looking for a sensible safe place, for an evenings potter!

Please PM me with any possible ideas.

regards

What about Chilbolton - only strip that springs to mind.

Purely out of interest - why not? Am a bit confused by the above - it seems to imply that those three are mil bases (which they aren't).

why not? as i dont enjoy that environment anymore.

Not implying they are military - but acknowledging that there are military bases with hangerage nearby. sorry if i was not that clear (?).

Fairley mount

No idea where Fairley mount is actually. Can you talk me in to its position? Any contact names to any places would help.

Also the plane needs to be looked after by someone who knows fabric and old planes.. and hopefully by someone who is recommended. any offers?

regards

There are quite a few strips to the W of Salisbury; try Google Earth. Wing Farm too far?

Hope the sternum's better.

Is Henstridge too far? There are good hangars there and if you are resident there are very few restrictions on coming and going out of hours...And it doesn't get waterlogged. PLenty of fabric aeroplanes there, and plenty of people that know about fabric. We sublet half our hangar for about £80 per month, but someone else my have room.....

Chilbolton is a great place to operate from and an easy drive/flight from Salisbury - 410m of grass is on the short side but should be okay for your aircraft. The problem may be the hangar - tie-downs are not a problem (a little over £30/month last I looked) but unless you can find a T-hangar going spare, and I'm not aware of any going, you'd have to negotiate permission to build your own. That is however what quite a few people have already done and a purist flying with an elderly taildragger should fit in well.

Right....But that is not too bad. So long as you've landed by sunset you are ok which gives plenty of evening flying in the summer.

Thanks for all the replies. Having flown from this area for a while i'm pretty up to speed with all the main airfields and i have seen a number of nice strips both from the air and the road that would look nice to fly from. (there is a particularly nice looking one just south-west of the A3030/A36 junction with a twin parked there - or the one just north of dinton).

However, having based at farm strips before i know that the form is just not to drive around some farmers land looking for a hangar or worse still to land unannounced! Thus i was hoping anyone could pm me numbers or emails or even postal addresses so i could introduce myself to the owners and discuss if space was available and if i were suitable.

Chilbolton a bit far and to be honest little chance of me building a hangar - used to fly in there and have the plane looked after by Cliff lovell.
Henstridge - again, a bit far having driven past countless strips on the way. Also the "evening restriction" is not idea and one of the causes of not using a closer more obvious airfield.

So if anyone knows the contact details of any strips, that would be great as there is a beautiful aircraft and a keen, able, sensible and experienced enthusiast looking for a home.

regards

ps. as a seperate issue, anyone fancy a share in a pitts or similar in the area?
