Why are most runways east to west ?

My guess would have been Cornwall given the near exclusion of easterlies and the like.
I'll have to admit to being a bit surprised by the initial query that started the thread but I guess you never know what you (and others) don't know.
Flying up here a decent idea of the wind and its effects is not just very helpful but sometimes the only things that will stop you getting into real trouble.
Mind you I still recall the number of places I've landed where windsocks at either end of a runway are pointing in different directions!!
