As One Door Closes.........
After reading and contributing about my home airfield, Sheffield, being closed, I am led to believe that offers are being acceptaed to re-open Stretton. This former field lies in the Manchester Low Level Corridor but otherwise can give a 1200m runway of tarmac and with some sensible investement could become an excellent GA field for many years to come.

I worked for Marples Rideway when they were digging their way through the airfield for the M56 (1973). At that time the airfield was being used occasionally for crop dusting..there is a nostalgic moment!!
It sounds like a great idea for a GA field although the residents will think differently. I think I would prefer an airfield to a motorway on my doorstep. motorways never close.

My understanding was that Stretton was suggested as an option for various groups requiring a strip in the area but due to it's proximity to the Manchester CTZ (it is in the LLC but it borders the Manchester CTR) it didn't happen. I believe some microlight flying happens off a grass strip at the side of the asphalt strip but that's about it.

I would say "Sorry, my sympathy about EGSY, but not a good idea" to encourage further operations at Stretton due to the potential effect on the Low Level Corridor. Also, the circuit would conflict with the Manchester zone. The possibile implications of someone in transit sighting the field late and avoiding it to the east don't bear thinking about...
