Niknak - come down from that flight level!! Its common knowledge that Peel prevented any possibility of investment/expansion/encouragement at SCA. Just ask the people & businesses who tried to locate their aircraft there and was refused. Any losses in revenue could have been over turned if allowed.
As for the buildings/runway. Where is the subsidance?? Its one of the best runways in the UK! Definately one of the youngest.
Downsizing to a heliport was bad enough. Then to announce closure?? Has this been confirmed? Where did 22 April come from?

Notice to quit letters rec'd today from Peel via their slimey solicitors in Leeds, with the implication that the CAA were behind the decsion to close the airport.
Unlicensed from 31st March and hangar to be occupied by polis and air ambulance.
Another victory for the pigs and the forces of darkness of the PRSY.

Don't forget to give them a call first for PPR and to get yourself acquainted with approach procedure. There is no circuit, and if the wind is anything like today you'd be best calling up a few miles out to make a straight in approach from the VRP (M1/M18 intersection) There's plenty to do once your up here - the airport is only 3-4 miles out of the city centre so the taxi quite cheap.

Mariner 9 ..if you do drop in don't expect free landing fees with fuel uplift if you are in a heli or single, or indeed a free meal if you are in a twin.
We popped in for fuel last year in a twin heli and were told that was no longer offered despite what Mr. Pooley advertised. In the end we managed to get a free landing fee, but they weren't happy and we were hungry...

Landing fee is waived if you uplift 50+ Litres.
Not recieved our letter yet although been told its on the way, understand we have until end of March to clear off. Will be interesting to read as if they do say its the CAA fault a few people will be putting Mr Peel to right

Does The Star deliver that far South ??
Looks like the JG PR machine kicked into action there.
But the 'electronic aides' are still there and the NDB/DME still operate (and VDF) but the "Peela's" have refused to maintain the ILS.
As a facility it would have made a superb training location for instrunment flying as the traffic is so light and it had everything except radar for SRA. Could have relieved the waiting time at Cranfield ..... instead of 5 times round the hold you could transit to EGSY

As it was a cracking day hereabouts, we flew into EGSY (took us hours from EGNF!) to pay our respects. We talked to a a few of the people there, who, like us, are gutted. It is a travesty that such a facility is to go.
In our experience, the folks who work there have never ever been anything less than professional, pleasant, and courteous.
So sad for them.
But, looking on the bright side of things, Sheffield will still manage to hang on to its reputation as having a backward-looking Dinosaur for a council.
Ee, ecky bloody thump. I'm sure I have just heard Fred Flintstone rumbling down High Street in his car!
P.S.
Since returning home from the day's activities, and talking about the above to friends, I was told that it was reported in our local rag (the one quoted above in another post, but different day) that Donnydrome is now suffering some hardship and had appealed to (Donny ?) Council for a reduction of its rates. Deja Vu anyone?

I've just heard that the Police and air ambulance will remain flying from what will be left of the airport, i wonder if Peel Holdings will donate some of their new found fortune into building the Yorkshire Air Ambulance a suitable operating base since it totally relies on public funding for the excellent work it does... What a great opportunity it would give Peel to give back something to the people of Yorkshire after taking so much, after all, they brought the airfield for ONE POUND and its been valued at over 40 Mil.....

Is it possible to view the airport site from a convenient vantage point? I thought there was a public park/open space or whatever to the North of the airfield, possibly an old spoil heap?
Will be in Sheffield once before it closes and would like to pay my respects.
I agree totally with the comments about appealing to Peel's charitable instincts and providing the Yorkshire Air Ambulance with a hangar gratis, small beer to Peel in the great order of things......

[Rumour network on]
Fingers crossed, the only good thing to come out of this will be that Doncaster Sheffield InternGalactic Space Port is opening up to GA including flight training, hopefully without silly minimum invoices.
[/Rumour network off]
EGNF will still much nicer place to be than either EGSY or EGSY though.
