You can measure track distances with a piece of string.
Check your finger joints / widths. You might find you have a 'handy' measure that you can't mislay, and don't have to pay for. On the UK 1:500000 charts lots of men have a 10nm-wide thumb. Women tend to be 7-8nm which makes the arithmetic harder for them.
