James May in Heat

Flicking through my wifes copy of heat today (8-14 Dec) edition there is an article on James May.

It says "he can fly planes! small ones anyway. James holds a full private pilots licence, although he once flew a Cessna 182 on Top Gear with Richard Hammond as his passenger before he'd qualified"

I remember the show and that he did not have a night rating but must have had a PPL?

I remember that programme too. "Captain Slow" the Hamster called him. Well if he wasn't qualified one can only hope the cameraman had an Instructors rating. Would have been pretty stupid to film yourself breaking the law and showing it on an already controversial TV show!.

but most instructors have Instrument and Night Ratings so why not just fly straight home and beat the car?

Good point, but it wouldn't have looked good on a motoring show. Lets face it, Clarkson and Hammond spend most of their time taking the p*** out of James May, and we can't have a nasty little aeroplane beating some very expensive car can we?
