Thats my understanding, I was speaking with Martin Marsh from the CAA. I have 42hrs Rotary and 41hrs fixed wing. As I have under 100 hrs Rotary I have to do all the theory tests and the remainding hours of Instrument I didnt complete in NZ. This would need to be carried out on the Hughes 300 which is the machine I did all my time on.

I'm thinking about sending my brother over to NZ next year, thought that because it was cheaper it would be better, but then it's going to end up working out more if you need to do more exams over here.

It was fantastic flying, I got Mountain Rated and have a load of Low level hours as well now. I got to boost my hours by ferrying as well.

Guys the deal is this:
You can quite happily fly in the UK in any aircraft that you are rated on your NZ licence with certain restrictions - day, VFR, private, only in UK airspace etc. check out lasors. For example I am rated on C172s and supercubs so can fly these aircraft in the UK (as long as they are G-reg) - this is without converting or doing anything (aside from obviously getting advice/check flights with an instructor, briefing on differences in airspace etc.)
As for converting, as you would need to do if you want to fly other aircraft for example, it's simple: less than 100 hours total time you have to take all the theory exams (including RT and practical), a skills test and get a JAA medical. With more than 100 hours it's just Air Law and Procedures, Human limitations (for some reason, never understood that), and obviously RT and practical. And a skills test and get a JAA medical. It's all in lasors.
I got a NZ PPL(A) with Jackie Frame at Hanmer Air a couple of years back. A small set up but I had a great time and would recommend it to anyone. Went back this year and did some flying out of Fielding was also great, they have a beautiful supercub there.
As has been mentioned before on here, Irv Lee has an excellent site regarding conversions etc:

hope that helps.

"According to UK licensing" that is correct - it is all SEP with differences training signatures for tailwheel etc.etc. as you say.

However, for NZ licences things are different! Aircraft-specific "type ratings" are required from the word go. For each aircraft you fly you have to get a "type rating" - whether it's for a PA28s, C150, C172, PA18 whatever.

For a NZ PPL holder flying in the UK - as you would be flying under the privileges of your NZ licence, then the NZ licensing rules are the rules that apply.

You can't fly any other aircraft unless you get a "type rating" signed off by a NZ instructor, and post the forms back to the NZ CAA.

easy as that.

Whatever you think. I'm no expert in the red tape of the CAA, but all I know is what the UK CAA advised me when I was finding out what I needed to do to fly here on a NZ PPL(A).
