VANS RV-10 and kitplanes
Hi,
a friend of mine and myself (both PPL's) have been looking into purchasing an aeroplane recently.
After flying tecnams etc, we are looking at the Vans RV-10 as our "ideal 4 placed tourer" opposed to the likes of the PA-28.
If anyone has experience with Vans aircraft and willing to lend some advice, please reply and let us know what we are getting ourselves in for if we decide to go with this route.

Here is IMO an excellent site that an RV7 builder - Richard Horan - has put together...
Don't know if he would have time to read the forums here but if so... Congratulations on the build so far. Richard - I wish I had the time, money and patience to do something similar..

The best place to go for advice on Vans in the UK is the UK RV Yahoo group. You'll need to register to read it.
There aren't any RV-10s flying in the UK yet, although there are some under contruction in the UK. However, the design doesn't have full PFA approval yet (but is going through the process), so importing one from the US isn't an option, and has an element of risk anyway - see this PFA document
It is a very nice aircraft, as are all the Vans designs

If you mean an already built example, then the market is almost vanishingly small. and what there is being US based.
The PFA are discouraging of imports, but if you do find one, it should be possible. You do need to jump through a few hoops though to get there, and that will only be possible after the first UK example gets approval.
Building a quick-build kit is within the capabilities of most, but will need at least 1500 man hours, much more if you start adding on the goodies.
I've found Van's to produce generally excellent kits, with good support and well thought out designs.

There is a ban on importing 4 seaters. The “risk” of the build not being to UK standards and the fact that you can kill 4 people or some such argument. If you could I wonder if you would still have to pay the £2000 sercharge!

I have finished building a Vans RV7 - the kits are proberbly the best on the market.
You can check out my build site at www.go-7.co.uk - the build diary section shows what is involved.
FYI I don't think the RV10 is a PFA approved kit yet. There are two/three being built and will need to gain approval. Knowing the RV kits it should not be a problem. Just may be a while... depending upon engineering workload.
