Trip to Iceland

Hi All,
Thinking of planning a trip to Iceland during the summer. I will be flying from S.E. England in an Arrow. Can anyone offer any tips or advice on route, places to stay etc.
Many thanks in advance.

If you could pick up some peas, oven chips and some kind of desert (preferably chocolatey) that would be great!

Sorry...

Hat/Coat retrieved and heading out the door....

Hi Rudds,

I highly recommend Vestmannaeyjar. It is an island just off the south coast. Good airport, and excellent scenery. Small enough to walk all around. The volcano is facinating. The whole story of the eruption and near closure of the harbour, in the early 1970's, is well documented in an older National Geographic magazine.

From there Reykjavik would be about a half hour flight, it's a great place too...

Have fun, fly safe...

Rudds,

I think this has come up once or twice before. Try a search using Iceland (and also Faroe Islands) for some usefult tips. I managed to find this thread which may be helpful.

It would also be worth having a read of 2 Donkeys' story of how he flew his TB20 to the USA via Iceland - you can donwload a PDF of the account from here.

Do you have an IR? if not then you'll be restricted to below FL55 once you get to the Icelandic FIR.

Go to Reykjavik, not Keflavik. It's walking distance from the city centre (nice, flat walk too) and you can stay at the Loftleidir and keep an eye on your Arrer from the bedroom window.....

Absolutely must fly to Vestmannaeyjar (BIVM). Beware however of strong turbulence at the threshold, as the runways are quite elevated from the surrounding, and winds are often strong.

If you're not heavy, land on the sand strip at Skógar (BISK ?) and see the waterfall.

Fly to Þórsmörk (BITM) and then to Landmannalaugar, very scenic, then continue west along mount Hekla to one of the airfields in the rural areas there. (note, you can't land at Landmannalaugar).

If weather permits, fly across the highlands to Akureyri (BIAK).

Fly to around the Snæfellsnes peninsula, you can land at Rif (BIRF ?) or Stykkishólmur and go whale watching.

Fly around the whole island if you have the time !

You'll be surprised how many airfields there are.

I can help you finding the AIP for Iceland on the net if you drop me a mail (tomas at mail dot dk).

For the record, here's the info that I sent to rudds:

Here's the AIP: www.caa.is/Forsida/FlugmalahandbokinAIP/view.aspx?.

You can also buy a VFR map from the CAA there, just mail them, transfer the money and they'll send the map.

Also, a lot of useful information, pictures, etc. at the largest flying club, although only in Icelandic: www.geirfugl.is

More help please

Thanks to eveyone for your previous replies, my trip to Reykjavik is now on for the end of this month.
I have decided to stop at Wick and Faroe Islands for fuel.
I have the ONC chart which shows Scotland, Faroe Islands and southern Iceland but it doesn't show airspace, is there another chart available?

Cheers Rudds
