Gusts or own weather
Interested on the reporting of wind gusting X. Coming back this morning Biggin's METAR was something like 28 G 35, Shoreham 22 G 32 but Gatwick pretty much all day was around 16 knots no gusts reported, but with a TAF of 20 G 30. I seem to remember the reporting of gusts was triggered by something to do with the rate and strength of variations but it seems odd Gatwick has its own weather system, or maybe some other reason for the wind at Gatwick being at such variance with the surrounding fields.
Tell you what it didnt seem much difference when passing Gatwick either.

From ICAO Annex 3.
Only gust of 10kt or more, above the reported mean wind speed are reported. Only gusts in the previous 10 minutes are taken into account.

Thanks, yes I thought that was about the measure of it, but it is useful to have the exact definition.
It seems odd that Gatwick had its own weather system today?
