Lyneham Transit
All
Am planning to fly west this afternoon from Reading to Severn Bridges routing through Lyneham (M4 J16-> M4 J17). How busy is Lyneham in general...is it more than likely a transit will be approved?
Any other useful on navigating as directly as possible west from Swindon to Severn Bridges, very welcome.

Used the Lyneham overhead as a turning point (3000ft) on my skills test last year. They were very helpful, the only thing that nearly caught me out was time taken to receive clearance (Yep it could have been an infringement and a fail!!!!) so be prepared to orbit.

Lyneham does not have a MATZ. It has as Class D Control Area and a Class D Control Zone. COMPLETELY different rules apply. The relevant word is 'Control'. Maybe it's time to get the books out and read up about Class D airspace. Control Zones and Control Areas require mandatory compliance.

I would suggest another look at your chart - Lyneham does not have a MATZ, it's a Class 'D' CTR/CTA.
Lyneham normally very accomodating with zone transits - though I'd make sure you stay north of the motorway both ways through as if you get it wrong south of the M4 you could impinge on the circuit.
As for how busy - you can never tell. Depends how many aircraft are away working and how many are available for training.

... and of course I should have read the original exam question! The reason I remember it so well is because it was a test of how well I read the chart and planned for, and executed, controlled air space crossing and still nearly got it wrong. Pressure of the skills test is my excuse.
As an aside my examiner suggested I plan a flight there some time - he had done it and been well treated. Not sure what the MoD charges are for such a treat but it must be worth a go for the experience. Anyone else got anything to add on such a visit?

If you're navigating using ground features, make sure you don't mis-identify Wroughton as Lyneham; a lot of people did when the PFA Rally was at Wroughton in '92 and '93; they simply flew along north of the M4, missed Wroughton's runway and tried to land at Lyneham!

I like to think I would have noticed the lines of C130s and associated large hangars and got a slight inkling something was amiss...but there I can I did start this thread calling Lyneham a MATZ...

I flew Hercs from Lye up until a couple of years ago. These days it is less busy due to the operational tempo, (I know it sounds crazy but less training goes on when the fleet are tasked heavily, therefore fewer aircraft in the vis and inst cct and the new J does 95% of its trg in the sim as well.)
ATC are generally GA friendly and will accommodate if possible. Simply call up with standard r/t for crossing a control zone and they'll normally be able to let you through. Don't become Red 10 though!
