Discovery Wings Axed

Probably inevitable, but from March 1st it is replaced with a some kind of motoring channel (because we don't have enough of those ).

I know everything was repeated over and over and it was slowly being infested with programmes about trains and diggers, but I for one will miss this channel. If anything, it reduces the 'channel ammo' against the wife who insists on watching 'Dancing on Ice' or goodness knows what reality show in the evenings.

Pity. It was the only reason I got and still pay for Sky. The rest is 500 channels of utter rubbish interspersed by even more rubbishy adverts.

What a shame.
My Mrs will have nothing to moan about now - she used to hate me watching it!

Oh well it'll just have to be the gangsta rap on channel 526 (or whatever one it is) - plenty of private jets featured in those vids .

I used to love DW. A few years ago telewest dropped it from their line-up and replaced it with, "Men & Motors". I was furious!!. I picked up the phone and demanded to know why it had been replaced with a channel which shows "Topless Darts in Space". The polite reply from a young lady in the call centre was "Sir, we have discovered topless darts in space is a lot more popular than anything on Discovery Wings". I then watched said replacement and well, shall we say, I came round.

But lets face it, it used to be quite good, but as the previous points out, was increasingly lacking in things "Wings". I couldn't have watched another Airshow programme with John Nichols (sorry John if your reading!).
I used to watch Flight Deck though over and over again - the flight crew were hilarous in their choice of spectacles, for a start.

I will miss it. Yes, there were loads of repeats but there was plenty of good stuff, if you were prepared to sit up 'til 2 am!

Wings as I recall, was 90% war and 90% of that was US war and 90% of that was how good the US was at war. Tedium ad infinitum.

I did quite enjoy Heavy Metal, even if Mr Dickinson did induce the odd cringe, but that wasn't on Wings for some bizarre reason. Plane Crazy (well old now) and A Plane/Helicopter is Born were on Home and Lesuire. That leaves the larger than life Brendan "I'm a pilot" O'Brian hosting endless repeats of Flightline on Wings. All very watchable...first time around

What a shame!

I could select the discovery wings channel from the menu with my eyes shut.

To be fair, it never really satisfied my thirst for quality aviation documentaries though.

I did send Discovery a short email a while ago about the whole trains, cranes and everything else non aviation related on the Wings channel...their reply was generic stating they wished to give wing viewers a "similar ilk" which I replied in not so kind words telling them to rename the damn channel then... oops

The second link in a Google search for "Flight Deck" dvd gave me this:

http://shop.pilotwarehouse.co.uk/category11023.html

Although I'm sure that plenty of other retailers will have a similar range.

Why did they put so much train/digger stuff on an aviation channel? I loved watching DW when at my dads but last time I was there I also noticed how much stuff was on there that wasnt related to aviation, yet the channel was still called Discovery Wings. Last time I saw a train and a digger, neither had wings and flew. Maybe times have changed..

A shame because I liked Discovery Wings.

However I won't miss it too much as I have seen 99% of the programming. Probably 1 hour a month was new.

I think the future of specialist documentaries like this is web downloads anyway once they get DRM issues resolved.
