Good place for SEP hire florida?

Hi all, anybody able to reccommend a decent place in Florida from where I can hire a plane. I know there are loads, eg Orlando Flight training etc but none of them will let me fly across to the Bahamas/ other Caribbean places due to my not having enough hours (56) to satisfly their insurance requirements for such flights.
Hence, is there anywhere in Fl where this is not the case?

You do not meet our insurance requirements either.
Just a thought, what makes you think that with 56 hrs you are proficient/capable/safe to do a flight with extended legs over water, navigation challenges, poor radio radar coverage etc etc etc.

I am sure that you can find a unscrupulous operator in Florida willing to hire you an airplane.
Keep in mind though, a lot of places have renter requirements to protect YOU, the renter, not only for their own liability.

Well said B2N2. At 56hrs you should be concentrating on the basics.

I fly regularily out of North Perry airport with Pelican Aviation and they had no problems with me taking the twin or the DA40 out. They have a 200hr P1 minima and I believe were considering making having an IR for the trip a requirement as well.

Out of interest, what would the minimum experience be?
I'm going to Florida next year and was thinking of hiring a plane to fly down to Miami for the day and just have a general fly around. Which places would folk recommend?
Also, how difficult is it to get the required visas / paperwork?

Thanks in advance.

I enjoyed flying with Voyager Aviation - http://www.voyageraviation.com/
They are based at Merritt Island, which is right up near NASA http://www.flairport.com/home.htm

I have to admit though, I have about 150 hours and there was no way I was in a hurry to solo hire. Have fun - fly with the instructors (they were all great) and build up your hours.

The instructors have the local knowledge. If you want to do sightseeing, they are fantastic tour guides, and can handle the radio and airspace. You would be mad not to!

I'll be on holiday with the family so was hoping to take them out for the day somewhere.
Is flying in the states really that difficult that I can't get checked out for self fly hire in a few hours?
I have been flying for 5 years in the UK so am not as new to flying as the original poster.

Flying in the state is easier then here. You get flight following (FRS) everywhere you go pretty much.

.
Because ive got balls mate, and your comment is busting them!
There is no need to adopt such a patronising tone.
On a serious note, what makes this kind of flying so challenging? Ok, visual nav might be difficult over water but I was thinking id use vors, ndbs, etc with a gps helping along the way. Careful planning would be carried out with respect to the weather and Id take advice from local flyers before I went anywhere. A nice life raft with emergency locator beacon would be carried on board, to be honest maybe I am inexperienced but the idea doesnt really scare me at all.
Im up for a challenge basically, why not?

qoute: " am sure that you can find a unscrupulous operator in Florida willing to hire you an airplane."- am all ears!

Florida Flying

Although flying in the US is generally easier and more aviation friendly there are quite a few differences to rules from the UK. You would probably have to get an FAA PPL issued on the basis of your UK one, (I'm assuming you don't already hold an FAA licence!). There is no cost in the US for this but there is a lot of paperwork required some months in advance of you visiting a FSDO, (Flight Standards District Office), to get one issued. Have a look at www.faa.gov under licences and certificates to read about the process. You will have to pay the UK CAA £15 for the privilege of them releasing details about you to the FAA though!

I've often fancied flying to the Bahamas from Florida as well but the immigration issue has always put me off, the Visa Waiver Programme does not apply! Worth checking this out as well.

As for places to fly from, I generally use a couple of places on the Gulf Coast near Tampa. www.clearwaterairpark.com or www.bayair.com the second of these doesn't specifically mention the aircraft hire on their website but worth giving them a call, they have C172 SPs with G1000 available among others!

Whatever you choose, enjoy the flying!

I faxed one form to the FAA and one to the CAA, plus payment (which has gone up from £15 to £38 btw!). Have I missed something? Genuine question because I don't want to turn up in San Diego next month and not be able to solo!

dont overfill

Hi Baboon boy,
The bahamas is a fabulous destination. Do it.- but,-Theres a lot of good advice out there Do it dual first. You would not have any FAA licence issues. You would have more time to enjoy.
The visa waver scheme is still valid for an "excursion" from the USA in a light aircraft.
Do not plan using navaids, most don't work or are very weak.
Buy the bahamas guide by pilot publishing before you go. Transair do it.
On the longer water crossings you may be flying on instruments.
Practise your crosswind landings.
Don't rent an old aeroplane.Dont plan it between June & October if you can avoid it. Bahamas virtually close Sept. Oct.
Wish I knew how to post photos here.
I've hired from quite a few places but best service has been from Air Orlando at Executive.www.flyairorlando.com ask for Trudy.
Best of luck D.O

Hi mp
Wrong type of liferafts sounds unlikely, while reccommended are not a requirement at least for a private flight. I would like to know the real problem for future reference.Only problem I've had was not having a guaranteed destination address in the Bahamas-easily sorted.

Like I said it was my mate so I can only go by what he said and that wasnt the only reason just one that was given. I'll ask him the details next time I speak to him but thats not very often and it was a few years ago now. However, I know the almighty doller solved the "problem".

hi there

i just got back last week from flying in florida - oft. we rented a 152 for most of the time but took a 172 to the keys and the bahamas.
the bahamas is great and only 2hr 30mins from kissimmee - you get permission from the flying school and they send some paperwork off, we came back through miami to clear customs and that was that a nice day flying.

do it
