If it's only in Jet Blast, then who cares? Unless it's a bandwidth question. Is it?

Sorry to state the obvious, but why not have a chatroom here?

I don't hang around in them myself but many many people live their entire lives in them, so why not provide it?

One can do an acceptable chat facility entirely via HTTP, with a self refreshing browser window.

I second this.
Would that mean you'd pay then SkyHawk-N?

By some means other than killing the entire site stone cold dead for the other 99.9% of punters.

I ask out of curiosity really- I know how you all feel about this but how can we get around this avoiding the dreaded 300 second thing.....?)
lock the offending accounts?

Locking wouldn't stop them just registering another account though

No, but IP addresses are a dead giveaway. Putting a 5-minute wait on probationary members would stop the trolls from registering new addresses to get round a block.

1. Block their IP address
2. Subject their IP address only to the 300 second restriction
3. Give them a forum specifically for their drivel. I had sort of naively assumed that's what JetBlast was.

I have absolutely no problem with the 300 second restriction, as has been said before this is a forum site not a chat room.

Good for you.

Others do and hence the complaints.

Seems it has been reduced to 120 seconds, a major improvement.

Maybe we can run with that for a bit and see how it goes?

I have just got in from work to find it has been reduced to 120 seconds, much better indeed.

There have been some good ideas suggested here how to deal with it, and as Frank says, 120 seconds will do for now, see how that goes, maybe it will reduce in time if the serial posters back down a bit.

It is not just JetBlast that it is happening in, some mods have reported some users in other forums as being a bit trigger happy too. Thankfully, our forum here is pretty much safe from these kind of people and the people who do post a lot here, and there are a few, post constructive, well balanced, helpfull posts and it is easy for us all to see why this 300 second thing has annoyed most of us here.

I think by now the serial offenders will have been emailed by the admin to ask them to curb their posting habbits and the 'probationary user' function is serving us well at the moment too, a bit of a hassle for the new user to wait to get the posts verified as and when myself or Keygrip get around to doing them, but generally this method has stopped the spammers advertising as they used to. No one wants to come to this forum to read how to buy cheap phones, ipods, fake watches or loose weight or such so probationary user issue is not a bad thing.

Regarding the chat room, this has been done before. It did cost a lot of money for the licence to operate an exclusive pprune chat room, I think it was around a thousand pounds a year or so and it ended up with most of the chat room users there contributing out of their own pockets to keep it running. This came to an end though as most people, the regulars there, were in touch via msn or similar anyway and the chat room was eventually dropped.

Thanks for the responses chaps, as I say i was just curious as to what everyone thought of all this, me asking for your opinions is just that, not an offical ask by the site owners.

Curious about the chatroom costing that much.

It's true that in an HTTP system the PC has to constantly poll the server for any updates, whereas with a java-based user end there is no traffic whatever unless somebody has sent or received a message.

AFAIK all the original chatrooms used java (or dedicated .exe clients) but later had to move to HTTP because most people use them at work where the non-HTTP ones got blocked by properly configured corporate firewalls

I am actually pretty unhappy with the whole business of web based forums; I have been using Usenet for over 10 years and much prefer its incredible efficiency, killfiles for unwanted posters, etc.

Of course I can see why web based forums have "taken over the world": #1 simplicity of use; #2 pretty presentation with advertising being possible; #3 everything can be archived.

But one pays a price for this, which is that the range of expertise on these forums will always be rather limited because, in any human activity whether it is flying or growing tomatoes, those who know most about it have the least amount of time to write about it.

So, a web forum will always be suspended in mid-air, between those who have lots to say but never say anything worth reading, and those who have something worthwhile to say but don't visit very often because they are too busy.

Usenet suffers the same problem of course, but IMHO it stabilises at a much better position, containing much more expertise as a result. If I want to ask a very specific technical Q about anything, I head for e.g. rec.aviation.ifr or whatever.

Just a meaningless rant really

The Google usenet archive is just fine.
