Garmin GPS 3 Problem..... HELP

I have a Garmin GPS 3 Pilot and have a problem with it.
The unit is working 100% until I switch on the back-light feature.
When the back-light is switched on, it will loose the GPS signal within
a minute or so, if I switch it off and on again it will work again....
cant use the back-light feature or it looses signal again.
The unit is powered from the aircraft via the external power cord and
I have recently updated the units software and database via Gamin's
website.
I have run it without batteries & with fresh batteries but the problem still is there.
Any help appreciated.
Jon
