Faa Ppl/ir
Don't know about ME but for SE you need 40 hrs of which 15 can be in a sim and at around £100 an hour average depending upon location you can reckon on $4k to $5k. There are not generally any charges for approaches - yet
I understand you need to uprate the IR if you want to use it with ME so you might be better taking it ME to start with - check. Twin costs in the US in my limited knowledge are from around $170/hr.
Don't know if there are any charges for the paperwork/ VISa yet.
Have you got anywhere in mind ? I was wanting to take my FAA IR SE in the US and was looking for a pilot to buddy up with. PM me for more details if you are interested.

Inner,
YOu dont need to do the FAA PPL, you can jump straight in at CPL.
You can also combine the courses, i.e I did my ME / CPL / IR (already held a IR(SE)) together in the Seneca 2 and did one checkflight for issue of both licences. I then did the SE CPL later on.
IR SE(if you hold a JAA IR) will prob take you about 15hrs at about $120/hr
IR(ME) is a couple of approaches inc. asymetric to add the ME to your licence if you already have the IR(SE).
CPL about 10-15 hours at about $120/hr
ME I think is 5 hours although I did the ME and CPL training together and also required 25hrs dual for solo hire so worked out quite nicely. Think that was about $160/hr.
Checkflight was about $350 plus cost of aircraft, say 1.5-2 hrs.
Dont forget your writtens, long time since I did one but think they ran about $50 each.
Hope this helps a bit!

I know this because I never had a FAA PPL (just JAA) and on the day of my FAA CPL checkride the examiner wouldnt let the checkride start because of this.

My fault for not explaining properly but snowed under at work at mo so typing too quickly!!!.
You get your FAA PPL based on your JAA licence that allows you train for the FAA CPL.
My point was that you do not have to undergo full training and checkride for the FAA PPL, you just go straight for the CPL - despite some flight schools trying to convince you otherwise. Thereby saving your self 45+ hours and a checkride.
Its worth also stating that you can add an FAA IR to your FAA PPL in this case also without having to take the full FAA PPL.
However make sure you meet all the logbook requirements before you go for the checkride!!!! Mate went for his and as he didnt hold a Night Qualification he didnt have the required night hours (the FAA PPL includes the night flying privledges). Didnt get discovered until the examiner looked at his logbook leaving him very upset and instructor very embarressed!

Julian is quite right, I did the same myself.
Bear in mind you must meet the requirements for the CPL etc...for the ME I think you need 10 hours of PIC or "acting PIC" time logged.
I did:
JAA PPL SEP
Added FAA IR to my FAA SEP piggy back certificate (IMC given for free on JAA PPL)
Added FAA ME and at same time added the IR privileges by shooting two approaches to my FAA piggy back certificate
Did the FAA ME CPL test (IR privileges automatically added due to private MEIR)
Did FAA SE CPL (IR privileges already allowed due to private IR)
cheers

FAA info
Basicly, if you have the minimum hours required for the rating you want, you will just fly with the instructor until you satisfy him that you are ready for test. All you need to start is a FAA restricted certificate based on UK certificate. For FAA IR you will get IMC in UK but not recognised by JAA. The poster has JAA CPL/IR/ME. Should be no problem and quite cheap. CPL/IR will be stand alone. If he has the hours go for the ATPL. Dont forget to get FCC radio licence and a BFR in the log book for the initial FAA PPL.

On the subject of costs:
I had about 180 hours, inc. 20 or so ME hours (10 as PIC or thereabouts) as well as IR and it cost me in the region of $10,000 for both CPL's all in (exams, accomodation, aircraft, instructor, test fees, etc....). It cost me a bit more as I needed 250 hrs TT, though I saved a bit on the ME time.
You would need to do the IR flight test / exams, as well as ME CPL flight test / exams, though the flight test could be combined into one which would be more economic. Alternatively, and what I would do, if you plan on getting the SE CPL, I would do the IR flight test and SE CPL test in one hit, then the ME CPL and shoot two approaches to get IR privileges.
You would need a certain amount of dual time, a) because these are required by the FARs and b) you would need to be at the standard to pass the tests (there are some differences to JAA for all the tests).
cheers
