Has anyone done the rotary equivalent of the safety pilot course? I may be teaching someone this soon, and I'm just wondering how long it's likely to take. Since you have to be able to hover pretty well before you can do an approach and landing in an R22, I'm suspecting it'll take quite a while.

It took me over 10 hours to hover, a R22, someone with no knowledge of heli flying, might be able to get it near the ground, and basically crash it, better than not doing anything, I guess

I think we're talking in the region of 20 hours myself, but has anyone done it/taught it?

I think this all sounds like a good idea, but to go off topic a bit most of the schools I have self fly hired R22 & R44 from insist on having duals out even if the passanger is a rated pplh due to them not being qualified to fly from left seat as they are not instructors apparantly for insurance reasons because there has been at least one R22 accident caused by confusion close to the ground as to who had control.Have to admit to sometimes forgetting to remove them when my pax was a qualified pplh!.Although I always remove
the duals when solo or with non pplh pax to prevent inadvertant interference or jamming , or request from pax to have a shot at driving!

I looked at the AOPA safety pilots course for my fiancee a year ago as several flying schools around the country offered it. However I decided that in order for it to be any use then she would need to keep flying regularly in order to remember what she had been taught on the course, and based on that she might as well have gone a little bit further and completed the NPPL course. (money restricts both of us having a licence!)

However, to give my partner a greater understanding of flying, i.e what I'm doing, I taught her the RT syllabus on the ground and with the aid of an airband radio as well, a couple of months later she took the JAA RT exams and passed with flying colours. An RT licence can be held in its own right (I double checked with the CAA) So now when we fly together, Miss Waryhawk calls out the checklist and does the radio, and I fly the plane. This means she can get involved in the flying more instead of sitting in the plane wondering whats going on.
