My sixpennyworth. I have been a member of the Leicestershire Aero Club for many years. It is well run members club and is in a very healthy state financially according to the balance sheet for the last year. They do accept payment by credit card so by all means take advantage of that extra security. Hope you enjoy your PPL training. If you get as much pleasure from your licence as I have from mine over the last 49 years you will be doing well.

Quite right G-KEST, a well run club that gives a discount for paying 10 hours up front. Some people just like to bitch and moan, I wonder why they bother hanging out in GA circles as they can hardly like it as they will always find fault. The buyer should beware no matter what he is buying, most businesses have sharks swimming around below the surface. If anything in my opinion you get more decent people running flying schools than you get in business in general.

Hmm - I'm not sure I'd go that far. You do get a lot of keen people, but without business acumen, and given the nature of the beast, are often very close to the edge of viability. Some failures are not due to fraud, but because overheads go through the roof (thank you Campaign Against Aviation) or because they haven't had enough business to tide them through the winter.
There are some sharks though - and they leave a trail of broken dreams in their wake
In short, I'd say pretty much like any business. To succeed and prosper you do need to act in a businesslike way - so my advice, for what it's worth, is to find a school, long established, with a decent fleet and good facilities, then you'll have a fighting chance.

The BA Flying Club is a safe place for your money however Booker is a long way from Leicester. (We could possibly be stopping at Leicester for tea and buns during the afternoon of June 8th)
If anyone close to Wycombe is pondering the same question, this school is one of the few I would feel safe giving a wad of dosh. The tuition is first class too !

Be careful with the £££ mate,
I went to the eastern coast of Florida to a well know flying school to do some hour buidling, and became ill just over 50% through. As I'd done more than 51% of my hours, the rest became dead money...no chance of refund!
