12 year engine life and EASA

Can someone give me the lowdown on the 12 year rule for engine life? I operate on the N register where this doesn't apply, but my engine is now 12 years old although only has 600 hours. What's the story if I want to sell it to someone who will transfer it to an EASA reg?

Thanks
