JAA PPL renewal - they must be joking...?
Have I got the right form to renew my JAA PPL(A) (due for renewal in August)? SRG1102 seems to be the one, but can they really want me to send my log book and licence with it? What do airline pilots do while the CAA is renewing it - or can I continue to fly with a photocopy of my licence?
And don't get me started on the £63 fee...
[edited to add:] Also, I can't find anything in LASORS on when I can apply for renewal, i.e. how far in advance. Anyone know?

60 days prior to expiry. Lasors 2006 section C5.1. I can see why you missed it: the heading 'Note for UK BCPL(A) Holders' appears to cover the whole of that section but in fact only seems relevant to the paragraph immediately below it.

Read the Form! They only want your logbook if you licence has expired by more than 5 years. If its a JAA Licence it cannot possibly have expired by more that 5 years so just fill in the form and send it off. You must have a valid medical and an aircraft rating before they will reissue the licence.

Seem to remember when I renewed my JAR ATPL recently I didn,t send them any more than the completed form and fee.The form has boxes to state the validity of ratings /medicals etc.Sure the form says send logbook/licence at bottom but I definately didn,t do that.extract from Lasors
A UK National or JAR-FCL Pilot’s Licence will be
re-issued for a further period (5 or 10 year validity as
appropriate to the licence held) subject to meeting the
following:-
1) Hold a medical certificate appropriate to the
licence being re-issued valid for the first day of
issue of the new licence.
2) Have held a valid Certificate of Test, Certificate of
Experience or Certificate of Revalidation for any
type/class rating that has not expired by more than
5 years*.
CAA records should enable verification of your confirmation of the above otherwise why do us examiners have to send our 1119 forms into FCL when you reval/renew ratings and AME,s details of your medical renewal.my new license came back very speedily.Regards Stampe

That's a little unfair... yes, reading section 2 of the form that is what I thought. But section 8 says:
This doesn't seem to be referenced to section 2, though perhaps it ought to be (it is, after all, in a different font size, so I wonder if they typed '* together with' and Word auto-'corrected' it to a bullet point?) So at the moment I'd say it's unclear.

I have just parted with my £63.... I read that bit re sending logbook etc. and decided to take everything with me to them at Gatwick as I didn't want to let them out my sight. They told me that they didn't need to see them but seeing as I had brought them they took a photo copy! Suggest phoning just to make sure?

I got to the three months before expiry yesterday so I filled in the form. I rang the CAA to confirm what I needed to send (they agreed that there was no need to send logbook or licence, by the way). They asked for a copy of my current medical.
Nowhere on the forms (1102 and 1187) does it mention this requirement. I suspect it's not necessary and the lady I spoke to was wrong - but surely they know if I have a medical or not, or what kind of bureaucracy are those exorbitant fees paying for?

just a quick question, if you take the forms down to Gatwick yourself do they do it the same day? Does this work for any application? I need my renewal and night qualification done in a bit of a hurry as have to take it to the states with me next month.

They say RATINGS (and I guess that would include the Night Qualification) cab be added in the day (if you get there early enough) but LICENCES take time.
However, a licence re-issue as a renewal? Interesting question.....especillay as they would have to re-print your old (expiring) licence to add the night qualification. The obvious thing would be to change the date of issue at the same time - but this is the UK CAA you are talking about.
