Disused AD on northern M25

What would be the disused AD I passed this morning on my way from North Weald to BNN? It was south-east of St Alban's, right next to the M25 by that beautiful college-type building you see as you drive round the M25 (what's that, by the way)? Only just visible from the air - no hard standings left.

My GPS tells me it was at N51 43.725, W0 16.033, if that helps...! Might it be called Colney Heath, or something like that?

Tim

(PS North Weald was one of the best welcomes I've had at an airfield - friendly and helpful, and a fabulous airfield. They need your support - go and fly in!)

Its the old Handley Page factory at Radlett

.... as for your second question, do you mean the Monastery at London Colney?

Thanks - yes, sounds right. The reason I said Colney is that was the only placename the GPS would give me when I zoomed right in.

You might like to have a look at THIS link. The caption to the photo of the old Handley Page assembly hangars mentions that the M25 split Radlett airfield in two. (Similar to RAF Burtonwood, where the M62 divides the old airfield - shame, I have happy memories of Gliding there, back in the '60s.)

The other two 'dead' airfields in that general area are Leavesden & Hatfield. Please support North Weald in its campaign against closure and stop it becoming number three.

Thank you, tm, for you comments, I know that the staff at N-W always aim to please.

Can I remind everyone that there is a Fly-in at North Weald on sunday 18th, AerBabe has promised to put in appearance & so will I.

A large radio control flying club is still based there, so it does retain an aviation flavour.

Aww, shucks... thanks!

I'm pleased you enjoyed your visit, tm. But why oh why do Private Flyers always fly in on my days off?!

Monastery at London Colney
This is on the north side of M25 near the St.Albans junction. Formerly a Church of England convent of enclosed nuns it was purchased by the Catholic Church in the early 1970's and is now known as All Saints Pastoral Centre, London Colney. Used extensively by schools, youth groups and church groups for meetings and retreats.

Good visual reference point when routing through Mig Alley in the spam can.

Sorry, Aerbabe... and I can't make the fly-in, either. Sadly I mostly work weekends and fly during the week - which is great for availability of aircraft, &c. but a little antisocial!

Around 25 microlights did a fly-in at Radlett in 1990 landing on the main runway. Look at the second half of the photos at http://home.clara.net/bob.hood/photo.htm and click on the thumb nails

AerBabe,

Will you be there on Friday (30th)? I've got a PA28 for the day... might pop in for lunch...
