Doncaster Airfields (yes me again)

After great response from you lot about airfields enq. that I put up.. i have one more.

Going to the races at Doncaster on Friday, wondering if anyone knows of any good small airfields close to the town.

Again don't have a map to hand and can only look on multimap which gives me only big airfields like Finningley. Have banked on going here, but as mentioned like going to the smaller places if poss.

thanks v. much.

(problem is i live/work in London during the wk so don't have access to all my flying gear which is at home in Berks.!)

You could either try Sandtoft which is slightly further than Finningley, or (courtesy of Proplan):

Apart from security hassles getting back to my aircraft (but then where doesnt that happen these days) Donc is a pretty good place to fly to for GA- not expensive and relatively quiet.

That said Sandtoft could probably better use your tenner and the cafe is very good! (just mind the lamposts when landing!)

And don't let the Rapier missiles put you off on short final.
They're there for people who forget to pay the landing fee

I've got a funny feeling that Walton Wood isn't an option.
I flew a heli in there a couple of years ago and I seem to remember there being a 30ft telegraph line going across the grass strip area. I think this is why it's for heli's only

Yes - they're Bloodhounds.

Could also try Sheffield or Netherthorpe both a 30 min taxi ride away.

I'll be at the races on Saturday - good luck on the gee-gees.

If memory serves me correctly, when I visited a couple of months ago, the old missiles had gone

The lampposts on the Industrial Estate on the other side of the road are still alive and well though.

Walton Wood is OK, the power line is on final but not a problem, I used to be based there. You are still 15 miles from the racecourse and the cab fare may be expensive. Call up and find out, they are friendly and have fuel. If you are flush, Digby will ferry you to the races in his helicopter !

For Doncaster Races.

1. Go to Doncaster RHA (Finningley) but you still need taxi tpt to the races.

2. Go to Sheffield (EGSY), take bus to Meadowhall tpt interchange (every 15 mins) and get train to Doncaster, get taxi to races from station.

3. Sandtoft is a while away from Doncaster by taxi (expensive)

4. Walton Wood is a H Pad even through there is a grass strip. And it is IMPOSSIBLE to get taxis from there (although getting back from Doncaster station by taxi is easy).

Using EGSY is probably the lowest cost and fastest option. Closing time 2000hrs.
