Avionics theft?

When i was doing flying training in California all the aircraft here had metal panal covers that fixed onto the control columns with a lock and served as a control lock and kept people from thieving the avionics. This probably isn't an issue for the larger airports but if these lowlifes get wise to aircraft on farm strips they are bound to eventually realise the value of these things..

there probably isn't much of a market for GPS's etc. with wires hanging out of the back but just wondering if anyone has any experience of aircraft being broken into for the headsets or avionics nicked?
