Airfields near Thirsk racecourse

Hi,

taking some people to Thirsk races on Saturday and can only find Leeds Bradford on the map. Will have to go there if the weather is bad but like to avoid bigger airports.

anyone know of any good lil' strips?

cheers, TD

You could try Bagby.

Cheers

Bagby is a good little field to visit, but it has a very steep (for a runway at least) grass slope. If your carrying pax, I would do some performance calcs before you commit yourself to a a visit, as you might have a real struggle at max weight going uphill.

Topcliffe is handiest, of course, but I doubt if HMG will open it just for you.

Many happy memories of my time in the Bulldog there.

Now a satellite of RAF Linton-on-Ouse.

Toplciffe will be open with AirCadet Motor Gliders at the weekend, speak to Topcliife Tower, and ask them if there is any chance you can get in.

yes weather was not good. Went over the LBA at FL50 then decended over the low ground south of Topcliffe cloud base was about 800ft i was quite lucky with the weather. If it had been the same as it was when i left bagby then i wouldn't have got in.

Avgas is cheap there too £108p/litre inc vat
