This Forum did us proud last year at the Robin Hood Fly In when 160 of you descended on our cracking Nottinghamshire Airfield (the former Rolls Royce Flight Test Establishment) and raised loads of money for Cancer Research


Everyone welcome, Free Landings, Aerial competitions, Food and refreshments available, Stalls and displays, Camping available overnight

Please come and support a great established fly and meet some friends old and new.

They'll PPRUNE gathering at the base of the windsock at 13:00 I'd like to put some faces to some of those usernames!!

Hope to see as many of you there as possible on the 20th and this year we've mown lots more parking areas!!!!.

I hope to be there if the Airtourer behaves. With the newish East Midlands airspace, do EM prefer a call or (like Stansted) are they happy for you to transit from the South below 1500 feet?

EMA (castledon, nottingham/derby/...???) are usually most amenable to a transit.
Most commonly it will be E of the M1 below 2000' (Shepshed & Long Eaton lanes), and you may need to hold/adjust for final approach stuff, but generally straightforward.

Following the Fosseway to the East at 1499' is always an option.

I hope to be there in the RV in the morning.

I've got a one-way ticket to Hucknall on Saturday in an aircraft that is staying overnight. I unfortunately, need to be back at work early Sunday morning...

So am trying to hitch a lift back home again, if anyone has a spare seat!

My destination is Enstone (Oxfordshire). Cost sharing expected (unless it's a huge thirsty beast... might need to talk to the bank manager first!).

Thanks for the "heads-up" Mark 1. The local 5-day forecast has changed through 180 degrees and is now forecasting heavy showers instead of CAVOK. I guess we'll get what we see on Saturday morning.

With the newish East Midlands airspace, do EM prefer a call or (like Stansted) are they happy for you to transit from the South below 1500 feet?

My experience is that they're usually happier if they know who you are and what you're up to even if you're not planning on going into their airspace. EMA do seem to get some zone busts these days and whilst they seem to be fairly relaxed about most of them its still better not to do it - beware the new airspace if you only "think" you know it, especially as upper airspace now extends right up to the EGNA ATZ.

As has already been said, EMA also are accommodating to transits when that's possible - most direct route from the south would be through the Shepshed/Long Eaton lanes as mentioned - but if you go up the east side beneath the class delta I suggest you give them a call anyway once past Leicester AD or west abeam Leicester city if you're that side (up to then talking to Coventry may be wise given the possibility of 737s in the open FIR). Routing to the east, EMA may well give you a squawk and often ask for a call east abeam the extended centreline. A couple of other thoughts - if you do go up the east side, beware Nottingham/Tollerton's ATZ at the north east corner of EMA's airspace, and I'd also suggest that routing from vicinity of Tollerton direct to Hucknall could be difficult to justify in a single!

If you're heading up the East side, simply follow round the edge of Nottingham and eventually you'll see Hucknall.
If you reach the M1 you've gone too far.
Keep clear of Langar, they'll probably be meat-bombing.

Yes it does look a goer. All the wind and rain from the slow moving front came thru Thursday night. We've been at the airfield all day today preparing and its been glorious in the sunshine believe it or not. The whole airfield has dried out a treat and the runways and taxiways are in excellent condition for you all.
The 18 hour TAF for East Midlands reads as follows:-

Just got back from Hucknall and I must congratulate the organisers on a very well run Fly-In. Interesting selection of aircraft and I hope the Cancer Research ladies did well from the non-appearance of the burger van. East Midlands were very helpful with a transit of their zone, so all in all a very good day. Only slight disappointment was the non-appearance of ppruners at the windsock at 1300 but I did meet "Taildragger" so that was a bonus.

Enjoyed myself, great tea and lunch, glad no one was there from PFA Engineering, might have said something I would have regretted !

Lovely trip back on top, pint, home in time for tea - Marvellous !

Thanks Nick, great flyin even if I was only able to stay on the ground for 45 minutes!

But "Wot, no burger van!!!"

East Midlands approach sounded busy with transits, so busy in fact the very rarely used "East Midlands director" seemed to be active for vectoring the commercial inbounds - quite a surprise!

Hope the flyin went well for everyone and here's to next year's - as long as the burger van comes back!

Thanks to everybody who turned up and made it a great day. We had 130 aircraft on the ground and raised £900!! for Cancer Research. Apologies for the non appearance of the burger van (it was booked but just didn't turn up!!!), thank goodness we had the food from the Cancer Research ladies.
As to the non appearance of the PFA, I'm afraid it was only the East Midland Strut of the PFA that were running it, well six of us in truth (I wasn't able to do anything else on the field except marshalling), and so we didn't have anybody from Turweston. I must say though that at some parts of the day it did feel like a scaled down PFA Rally.

Tip for next year, put the Monarch cutlery and Excalibur napkins on Ebay, raise more money for cancer research and get some cheap plastic forks from Asda.
