I guess it depends on how much money / hassle you want to go through to keep an Autocrat flying.
Does it really need a new engine ?
A while back now I did see quite a few parts, including a minor engine for sale in an Australian magazine / web site. I think it's called 'rag and tube'.
Or you could try and get something out of the man at Carr farm (Cliff baker ?)who has a whole collection of austers, but doesn't like talking to people
Other than than you could convert it to a N model with a major lump and parts. £££££££

Fortunately we have managed to source some Unobtainium (oxymoron!!) and have got my cylinder fitted with a new exhaust valve and seat plus new valve guides. Hopefully it will be nailed on, err, professionally installed, this week.
Now watch next weekend's weather turn to poo as I'm planning to collect a half life cylinder that has turned up.
poor southerner I am considering fitting a Lycoming O-320. I have located the drawings, engine frame, cowlings and the vertical fin. All I need now is a rudder off a J1/N (Gipsy engined) and a reasonably priced flat crankcase O-320. Apparently the ones from the Robbo R-22 are perfect. Should only cost around £7,000 plus fitting......... Alternatively does anybody know of an unloved O-320 powerered Auster that I could cannibalise?

Yes but don't forget Peter. For the 0320 you also need to replace the smaller lift struts (fronts ?) with the wider ones. That alone could cost £ 700, less any rebate on old ones.
Have you sourced the engine frame at the right price. There is a bargain one advertised on thehanger.co.uk right now !!

shortstripper what about the wartime Auster 5's with the O-290? they looked OK. Don't forget that the Auster was born as the Taylorcraft
poor southerner nobody told me about changing the lift struts. I'd never noticed that the bigger engined Austers had different struts. Will check with my font of knowledge who holds the Mod. If it is the case it makes getting a tatty Auster to cannibalise an even better prospect. I can't access thehangar from work, our net nanny treats it like a porn site........
Has anybody seen the Auster that Dr. Kirk is selling for 5k?

There are only a handfull of 0320 / 0360 J5 Austers about. Certainly none for spares reclamation (I think the last one completed only flew last year, based on Anglesey).
The J5's with 0290's are very different, lacking larger tail surfaces, struts and the engine frame is different.
As for the man Kirk selling an Auster. Would this be his old tugmaster,6. ?
If so and you REALLY want to know about it. Send me a PM, don't want to disclose in public.
