Courchevel 1850 Altiport
Hi,
I'm planning a trip to the Alps but not to ski, to do the course which gives you permission to fly to the altiport.
Has anyone been there from the UK? What are distances? I fly a C182 (turbo), i'm IR but the airplane is not deiced so don't want to be flying around there in crap weather! Where did you stop off if anyone has been? and how long did it take? is it an excursion with something like a 182 or would it be adequate?
i would find out for myself but don't have any charts for the area so thought I would ask.
many thanks

Courchevel is perfectly doable in a C182. From Blackbushe routing via BIG, LYD, BNE, CTL dct Chambery is approx 455 NM. Well within the capabilities of a C182.
Chambery is a great stopping off point and is an interesting approach through 'Whiskey point' a gap in the mountains followed by a sharp left turn along the mountain wall then a right turn over the lake. Very spectacular but prefferable in VFR!!
From Chambery it is a 15 minute flight up the valley to Moutier then into Courchevel.
Have a great time, its well worth the effort...When are you planning to go? Do you need any contributing pax? I need to revalidate myself.

Altiport
I have just returned from Courchval, I have been there twice and flown with the local club on both occasions. link attached

I did about 5 hours there last week, including trip around Mont blanc and landing on Skis at Alpe de huez, I had a fantastic time. The instructor, Roberto is very good and very experienced. I would strongly recommend you contact him before your trip. If you need it I have his mobile number. ENJOY

Thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately the 182 only has 4 seats and i've already got mouths watering at the thought of going so i'm going to have to keep it quiet. I will keep you in mind. I take it you fly from Blackbushe?
I have spoken to roberto actually, he is going to do the course with me at the altiport. As far as I understand you have to do it to be able to land there.
Many thanks

You are correct, You do have to do the course before you can fly there. I did it two years ago and have flown back in once since then, hense my need to revalidate. Yes I fly out of Blackbushe.
I suspect that accomodation may be a problem at this time of year due to skiers.? Are you just going for the a few days? Have you sorted rooms? Sorry I am being so nosey, but I might take my a/c back down anyway.

Accommodation is more problematic when the schools are on holiday. You should be ok until the Easter holidays. As discussed above Chambery is a good stopping point but it lies in the mountains and is not suitable for marginal VFR.

To add to what John said, Mrs SD informs me that there is also a staggered school break here in February (sort of like half term) so that the French can take thier Skiing holidays with the kids, so dont expect the slopes/accommodation to be free then either....

I'm quite lucky a good friend of my Dad's is a ski instructor there and he lives in 1650, he said I could stay with him while i'm doing the flying.
I was going to easy jet to Geneva and then go accross but I really want to fly down there. Plane is coming back from Hangarage soon so i think i'll fly down. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I’ve just returned for a week in Courchevel (for back on Saturday!)where I was planning to do a bit of flying along with some skiing! Never even made it to the altiport! Got a bl00dy kidney stone and spent the week laid up in a French hospital! Has to be one of the best holidays ever…. NOT!!! – Still credit where it’s due, the hospital was very good to me. Make sure you take a NEW E111 (you get them from the post office). They’ve changed this year and the old ones aren’t valid. Without it, my holiday would have become very expensive! Also remember that the E111 only covers 80% of your medical bills so you still need insurance!
Good luck. It looks like a fantastic place… I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

...and the doc at the bottom of the slope at 1850, who put me back together again a couple of years ago, has a son who flies for Air France!
