Question NAC PPL in August?

Hi everyone, i am hoping to go to NAC (as most people recommanded over OFT) this August/September for a PPL. What is the weather like during that time of the year?
I have done a search and most people thought the best time is to go around April. But is August/September that bad? i dont mind about the heat because I am from Asia and the heat is even higher.
Also, is that time a busy time for flight schools?
How long would it take (approx) for a PPL with Night qualification?
Thank you!

nac

Hi Daniel,

I arrived at NAC in Sept 04, and oh boy is it warm in Sept! I'd say that it must have been close to 100% with extreme humidity which is the killer!

Can't really comment on the PPL timescales as I already had it before I came, but I do know of people that have completed it in 3-4 weeks. The time of year that you mention is however the hurricane season, which can sometimes (and did last year) delay your progress by robbing you of a few days flying.

My best bit of advice to you would be to get all of your written exams completed before arriving here as that is what can delay people the most. Doing it that way will ensure that you can concentrate solely on your flying.

Good Luck

Hi ,
my son did the ppl and night a couple of years ago in august, he did say that thunder storms in the afternoon stopped progess a few times. also the point made earlier about the written exams being done before you go out is important, my boy did it all in three weeks and said it was not so much fun as a "character building experience". he was adamant that having the writtens done before you go would change the whole experience.

good luck

Thank you everone for your replies.
I want to go around August is because is the summer holiday, and I will have more time.
Yes i have heard from alot of people that suggested to complete all exams before I go for the real flying. I will do the JAA PPL, and where can I get then done in the UK?
How much is it in total (the 7 exams)?
Any exam for night qualification?

I have heard excellent reports about Derek Davidson's 5 Day PPL Ground School and Exams. That may be one option.

The other would be to study using Thom / AFE books and the Confuser (don't use the Confuser as the primary means) and take the exams at your local flying club.

Ensure you take the PPL Application From with the Exam Results ensorsed onto it when you go to NAC in August.

Not sure how much Derek Davidson charges for the 5 day ground school but I know the exams are included. If you take the exams at a local flying club then you'll probably be looking at something around £25 per subject to sit the exams.

No extra exam required for the night qualification. Indeed that is about the easiest rating / qualification one can add to their PPL in that there isn't a written exam nor a flight test.

Thanks Zulu.
25 pounds x 7= 170 pounds + 120 pounds of books (7 of them)
This isn't cheap.
I am not a member of any flying club, would they let me just to sit for exams?
Thanks!

If they say "No" - then go to the CAA in Gatwick, you can do the written examinations there.

Think they are about £55 a shot.

Dan,

I think it has pretty much been said, the thunderstorms at this time of year in Florida and frequent. However, I have been to Florida in August flying on more than one occasion, and it does not really cause a problem. As has already been mentioned, if you fly early in the morning, through to early afternoon, it should be fine.

Another thing is that the thunderstorm activity tends to be islolated and you can see them forming. When you see all those ing Cb's you know you are in for some heavy showers and lighting!

Enjoy it in the states, it is real good fun.

I'm pretty much in the same position as danielwong, in that I am also planning a trip out to NAC about July/august. I also plan to try get the exams before |I head over, only difference is that I am based in Dublin.

I Have been told, so can somebody please confirm for me that the IAA PPL exams would not suffice, so I would therefore need to do these exams in the UK?

Any other tips or advice greatly appreciated.
