I did three fairly long distance ferry flights in PA38's - POH said 19 litres. I didn't believe it.

Flew the aircraft, leaned them out carefully, kept very close fuel records, every one of them did just as it said in the book - 19 litres an hour.

With apologies for repeating myself from previous threads, but this question has no correct answer.

It depends how you fly the aircraft. What power setting do you use? Do you lean the engine, and if so - what leaning technique do you use?

As the replies so far have demonstrated, you'll get a very wide range of different answers because everyone flies differently. Power and mixture settings can make a huge difference, even on small engines like the Tommy.

The only way to get a true fuel-burn figure is to measure it yourself. Dip the tanks before you fly, and afterwards. If that's not possible then start with full tanks and then refuel back to the top after you've flown.

Measuring it yourself will tell you what your personal fuel-burn figure is, taking into account your power setting and your mixture leaning technique. If you do it often enough, you'll realise that it's incredibly consistent and you can have great confidence in your own calculations.

With every respect to those who have replied so far, you shouldn't listen to anybody else's figures in my opinion (and that includes "club figures").

<<edit:
that includes "club figures").
Quite right - good "ball park figure" though.>>
