Bristol or Filton ?

I need to go to Bristol next week, and am wondering which is the better airport to fly into.

Anyone have any views about convenience (for the city centre), GA friendliness, handling costs etc ?

Much obliged,

FF

Lulsgate is dear and miles from the centre. Dunno about Filton's prices but it is closer to town. Go to Staverton and get a cab... they used to (might still do) a deal for a free landing fee if you uplift fuel.... used to get loads of Yorkshiremen there then

Filton

Close to the City, Ops wil arrange a taxi (call 134.5 about 10 minutes out if you want it really quick - otherwise just ask when you get in the building).

Cheaper than Bristol - no handling fees

Very GA friendly - what day? (I might even be working).

Filton is indeed cheaper and friendlier, and I'd recommend it. But it's not dirt cheap either. Call Filton Ops in advance to avoid a Stella Artois moment in the landing fees office.

Mr McMurphy, you are a cheeky sod ... and for your edification, never forget that a Yorkshireman is but a Scotsman with the generosity squeezed out !

To the others, thanks, Filton it shall be. Not sure what day yet Chilli, but I'll make myself known on arrival (probably in the time-honoured manner, by landing several times! )

Cheers guys,

FF

Filton = good price and v close the centre.

I've never dared to ask how much it would cost at Lusgate but I've heard that it is the 'upper decile' of costs within the UK.

I would thoroughly recommend Filton as GA-friendly. They were my first stop on my Qx/c & couldn't have been more helpful. They were obviously looking out for me, as they told me the minute they had me in sight. They even gave me a hot drink & insisted I call my instructor. What great people! It's not cheap though...

Bristol was about £60 last time I went in for an overnight. Most of that was handling I seem to remember. Light single sub 1500kg.

I have been to Filton quite a lot.

They are very friendly - cost for landing and a days parking around £35. The parking is a reasonably significant addition to the landing fee. In case it is relevant they open at 10-00 on a Sunday (and also on Saturday I think).

Taxis seem easy to get - about 20 miniutes into the centre although I gather it does depend very much on whether or not it is rush hour. Expect much longer in rush hour. There is also a very good bus service from outside the main gates into the centre - every 15 minutes I think.

Filton seem to use their reporting points so check these. There is of course an ILS which they do seem happy to turn on at weekends although the "official" approach services does not seem to be available. Sea fog would seem to be a problem. They are PPR and expect a 'phone call in advance.

Parking is etiher next to the "C" or on the other side in which case it is a pick up in their landrover.

If you are coming form the East Lyneham will give you a LARS but watch as you leave their zone because Colerne like a call and it is easy to infringe their ATZ. You migt be asked to talk to Bristol City as well.

Filton always seems to be very quite - I dont understand why because it is a pleasant place to visit and very convenient for the city.

G-BOAC is there but unfortunately now closed after the sad accident last year.

They prefer you to use the westerly runway (cant remember the heading) so you might find you are offered a tail wind but seem happy if you request the easterly. There is of course "miles" of tarmac!

Enjoy.

0900-1700 Saturday, 1000-1800 Sunday, local times.

Approach service is always available, and the ILS is always on. What we don't have at weekends is radar.

It's G-BOAF

If it's light and variable or a crosswind we tend to use both ends. One of the reasons being to save you time, either by offering a straight in to the out of use end if practicable, or to save taxying time or distance on the ground. You should never get offered anything way out of limits. Same with departure.

Chilli monster - thanks for the corrections, I can see you are a local expert - possibly in the tower from your earlier comments.

Well Filton is a great and very friendly place to visit - very much recommended - I hope fully flapped gets there.

As to the accident (and correct me if I am wrong) last time I was there and asked about G-BOAC I was told some one sadly fell from the walk way.

Out of interest I assume the radar is off at weekends due to lack of man power.

That would be two extra fully rated ATCO's plus an extra engineer - the useage wouldn't really justify the expense (which would run to 6 figures over the year).
